• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Party Wall

Thanks. There’s no maintenance now, but also no maintenance necessary because the wall is protected by the other garage. In general what is the maintenance on a plain brick wall; repoint once every 150 years? I’ve owned quite a few plain brick walls over the years, but never a rendered one. I...

    Nervous about Surgeon

Thanks for all the responses. I’ve talked it over with my wife and processed it a bit more and I’ve realised that it’s not just that the doctor didn’t refer to my specific scan and medical situation and didn’t engage with my questions in a helpful way, but that I’m deeply uncomfortable because...

    Nervous about Surgeon

I have an upcoming operation. I had a scan and then went to see the surgeon. The surgeon didn’t show me the scan, talk about the scan, or say anything about the operation that was specific to me and my case. Does that seem normal? It was just paperwork - sign the consent form - and responding to...

    Party Wall

Things are progressing with the party wall agreement and my surveyor says it is almost ready. I have a question that I hope someone can advise on: The neighbours are removing a garage right next to our garage. Our garage is single skin brick with a flat roof. The garages are not attached, but...

Good advice. I have knives. I should use them.

Just saw this video of sash making with a bridle joint. Not the same design as I’m doing this time since I’m doing full mortices, but thought I’d throw the link in here:

    Wedged M&Ts

Yeah 1 mm is a lot. Let’s say it’s 0.4 mm or 0.3 mm. Sounds like you have low tolerance for defects at this stage. You’d check the stock and the mortice/tenon then and eliminate the issue before going further?

    Wedged M&Ts

So say you’re at the stage where you’ve cut the straight mortice and tenon and you’re doing a dry fit, how do you decide whether a problem is going to be fixed by adjusting the M&T versus some other fix? What level of perfection do you expect at each stage? For example, suppose at the dry fit...

So I think I’m going to put this one aside for now with no further changes and mark and cut the remaining mortices in the same way as I did this one (using the glass area as the reference, not the outside edge). I’m not going to update any calculations/drawings at this point - that will...

    Secondary glazing

Worked it out: I laid out based on the most important measurement being the interior opening size (based on the idea that I could order glass ahead of time - which I didn’t do in the end). The interior size is spot on. The rails are under sized. The meat beyond the rebate is supposed to be 35 mm...

Thanks Andy. I marked up in pairs as you describe from face & edge (only one set of stiles so far though) - except I used a mechanical pencil, not a knife. For the stiles, I possibly miscalculated or misread a number. Something silly. I'll work out exactly what tomorrow. For the rails, I think...

    Secondary glazing

I’ve mostly got one casement with simple (non-wedged) M&Ts cut & dry fit. Still a bit of adjustment to do, but it goes together so I thought I’d check exterior dimensions. I’m going for 468 x 1013 mm, but I’ve only got 465 x 1007 mm and this may shrink a fraction as I adjust the M&Ts for a...

    Secondary glazing

I’ve done a couple of mortices using plunge router & chisel. In the process of adjusting the fit, I could see that the rebate wasn’t full depth so used the router to put the rebate right. I think if I was more prone to panic, I could have made things a lot worse. The initial fit was terrible -...

I like the Presch combi too (and the Workpro is good too). Are there other metric-only combis? Have to be a bit careful if you try to get a metric-only Workpro combi - the only version of it I’ve seen is the combined set of 150mm & 300mm; if you get separately, you get a metric+imperial blade. I...

The marking up on the tenons was done quickly and I didn’t worry too much about complete lines because only the shoulders were final positions cut by the saw. The other lines were really just guides for off-the-line hand sawing - the final dimensions were provided by the depth stop of the router...
