• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Mike builds a teardrop (cedar roof nearing completion)

I’ve been re-watching Backshall in his Expedition TV series. My favourites are the jungle/river trips. Well worth a watch if you haven’t already seen. Think it’s on iPlayer or UKTV again. He’s not very comfortable in whitewater, but good on him for risking his life to give it a go for our...

    What I have fixed today

Not a one day job, but oak floor installed and oiled and re-oiled table top. The table base will have to wait for an abundance of free time to get the attention it needs. Perhaps 2027?

    Party Wall

Thanks for all the responses. Bit hectic yesterday. I don’t want to post the planning application because I like some level of anonymity, but it has been approved. The surveyor I’m talking to is MRICS. It’s academic at this point, but the plan is described in the application as a single-storey...

    Party Wall

If anyone has signed an agreement for a surveyor to represent you as your party wall surveyor and would be willing to share what it looked like or just comment on it, I’d be grateful. The one I’ve been given is vague about what my agreement with the surveyor actually is. Apart from the bit about...

    Party Wall

Just talked to a surveyor. He’s willing to represent and is already representing the property on the other side of the neighbours. Anyone see any issues with that? Anyone have experience or comments about getting some control over timing of the work (work hours) or financial arrangements...

So..is anyone feeling, justifiably, just that little bit smug ….

We filled up the oil tank end of December. Paid £609 total for 1000L. Don’t know how that compares for that time. I used to shop around, but one supplier was always the cheapest and they’re used to rural access so they get the business. Been cold, so going through it, but expect it to last until...

    Party Wall

New neighbour is going to remove attached garage & build extension close to property line. They sent me party wall docs while I was away so missed the 14 day bit and now I have less than 10 days (5 days) to appoint a surveyor or have them appoint one. Not quite sure what to do. Any advice? I’d...

Possible Problems with MacOS and iOS 26.3.1

I’ve been having a few WiFi problems recently and it got to the stage yesterday that I started investigating a new router (since perhaps one of the BT mesh units was having problems). I re-ran the setup on the unit in the workshed yesterday and maybe that’s fixed it. It got moved lower down...

After 53 years I have to take my test again!

Can you turn right on red in Mass?

    Workshop on a slope

I have nothing useful to contribute, but I noticed that your dimensions aren’t far off those of a three horse stable block (about 10.8 m x 3.6 m). Should be an interesting project.

    Beginners Woodworking Category

It’s working great. Thanks for the suggestion. It’s in use almost every day. You probably recall I screwed the magnet to the surface of the wall and now it’s painted the same colour as the wall so it’s not too obvious. Since install I’ve had a little practice plastering, so if I ever have...

    Beginners Woodworking Category

I like the idea of more signifiers on the site that would encourage more people including beginners (like me) to join & post. Maybe in the “rules” post in Welcome, it could say something about welcoming all skill levels if it doesn’t already. I joined in 2022 at absolute zero and only felt...

    Glasses - what's your view?

My $7 frames were on sale. Standard price probably $60-$80 and entirely equivalent in quality & stylishness to the frames that cost $250 in opticians at that time. (This was all a few years ago). I don’t think mine were Fossil, but there would have been Fossil sunglasses sold in the same area. I...

    Glasses - what's your view?

In the States, I bought $7 frames from Bon Marche and had prescription lenses fitted to them by an optician. Maybe opticians will do that here? Seems crazy to spend hundreds on frames.

    Makita clamps, Festool track

Here’s pics next to the Festool equivalent if that helps. I think the shorter bar on the Festool makes them easier for MFT use, but longer is better for rail clamps. I do like the Makita and that’s a good price for them.

    Makita clamps, Festool track

I have Festool track & Makita screw clamps They are currently not in the same location, so i can’t double check, but I think that the bars on the Makita clamps were just a smidge fat for the Festool track. However, I’d recommend the Axminster quick track clamps as a better cheaper option anyway...

    Unusual winter weather.

Blimey. You’re doing well. We’re high of 0 C and feels like -11 C. Bit windy today. Much warmer down the hill in the village though.

Praise where praise is due Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Many years ago I lost visual processing on one side for about 20-30 minutes (once I’d recognised what was going on). Neurological. Went to ER in case of stroke, but it just resolved so no real action. (Follow up MRI didn’t reveal anything interesting). I was reading a book and I was finding it...

'Carpentry helped me recover the use of my hands' -

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like I shouldn’t completely relax hand-wise, but I’ll probably just look forward to further knee problems, rather than expecting trouble in my hands. I’ve done a lot of typing in my life without trouble, but otherwise the worst stresses I’ve put my hands through were...
