• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Wedged M&Ts

It seems to me that through tenons exposing a small amount of end grain to the side of a window are small beer compared to the area of end grain at the ends of the stiles at top and bottom of the window. But none of these areas seem to suffer the worst of it because windows are actually quite...

American here in Oundle (Peterborough) - Brand new to woodworking

Making good progress! I’ve also been learning that a trim router is good for defining edges and depths and less good for hogging out material. It’s a great tool when combined with a saw, a drill, or a planer.

Looks like my mistake was trying to use the little driver which only has a hex bit holder instead of a chuck - too much play in it. Using the big drill with a proper chuck, I got similar results for the 12 mm bit as for the 3 mm bit. Not perfect, but close enough.

I like the ring & mirror ideas. Going from 3 to 12 and also with one size in between didn’t help me though. This bit goes where you point it, it seems. Is there such a thing as a bit with a long, blunt nose so that it actually has to follow the path of a pilot hole? It’s made me curious about...

    Secondary glazing

Today I learned that I can drill a 3 mm bit from each side of a 44 mm piece of wood to meet up in the middle less than 1/2 mm out freehand, but I can’t do the same with a 12 mm bit even with a guide block (centres were maybe maybe 3-4 mm off which is a lot). Vexing. I think one of the factors is...

    Unusual scrapers, or are they?

Chü - an elm not affected by any changes in temperature or moisture - also sounds interesting.

Of course what I should have done was carefully drill a nice plumb 12 mm hole in one piece of wood and use that as the guide - forget about the drill stand. Think I’ll try that next.

    Secondary glazing

I made the mistake of remembering that I bought a drill stand a while ago. The drill stand was a very poor purchase because I made the classic error of getting one that doesn’t have an integrated chuck. Obviously that’s a stupid design - not only do you have to rely on the bracket fitting your...

    Wedged M&Ts

More questions: Q8. Are you also pegging your wedged M&Ts? Q9. What sequence do you wedge, peg, glue? Q10. Please tell me all about which parts are being glued?

Think I’ll try to hinge the fly screens in these windows: I’ll have a few details to work out with the stops to allow the hinges to sit well. Might have to cut custom ones that are a bit deeper. I’ve been doing some experimenting with cutting mortises. One thing I tried was using the 12 mm...

    Mortice & Tenon Calculator

Thanks for taking a look, Paul. The chisels that are in there are just ones that I knew I had without going to the shed to check. It's not at all obvious, but you can change the chisels by changing the URL (add ?chisels=8,12,25,13,16,19 for example) or you can skip the bit where it adjusts the...

    Wedged M&Ts

    6. Do you cut the mortice entirely square through before cutting the angle or do you do it as one operation? 7. How do you cut the angled part so as to leave part of the mortice square? Are you using a guide for your chisel? Or eyeballing?

    Wedged M&Ts

Thanks Mike. I made Q5 a bit vague, didn’t I? What I really mean is do you define the size of the wedges/mortice in relation to the size of the shoulders on the tenon or vice versa? I have seen someone create the wedges from the pieces cut off the tenon to create the shoulders. I also wondered...

    Wedged M&Ts

A quick survey about your use of wedged through M&Ts please: 1. Do you angle the mortice all the way to both edges or do you stop short leaving a 90° part to the mortise? 2. Do you cut the kerfs in the tenon roughly parallel to the sides of the tenon or do you angle the cuts? 3. Do you drill...

    Mortice & Tenon Calculator

Well there was enough there to keep me occupied. Here is a sketchy first version that only provides info for the mortice, but hopefully gives some idea of what I’m going for: https://woodwindows.github.io/secondary-glazing/wedged-through-mortice-tenon-rebate.htm It’s got: 1. Picking mortice...

    Mortice & Tenon Calculator

Indeed. My calculator would be focused on single, wedged, through tenons on rebated material used at the corner of a frame, which could be written to handle material of any size, but it’d be nice to produce a warning when material dimensions suggest two tenons would be better for example. For...

    Mortice & Tenon Calculator

Does anyone use a mortice & tenon calculator spreadsheet/website/app for working out sizing & placement of your m&t joints? I’m likely to create my own specifically for wedged m&t in rebated material (because it helps me cement knowledge in my brain more than because it makes the calculations...
