• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

A 'Past Project' from 33~34 ish years ago...

My wife has a number of dolls houses. Some of them are peopled by 1/12 scale miniature figures which she used to make from Fimo and which she sold all over the world on eBay. Most of the houses we bought as bare carcases which we then decorated and furnished, some furniture bought as kits and...

    Probably Bye for now...

The debate about Bezos and Amazon is a bit chicken and egg. In my view, many high streets were dying before Amazon came along. In the large town where I live there is no shoe shop, no clothes shop (unless you count the rubbish stocked by Poundland), no hardware shop (the recently opened Boyes is...

    Festool ts55 blades

Not willing to shell out for the pukka Festool blade I bought a Trend one for my TS55. It’s okay, not as good as the genuine article, but for occasional use such as I put it to it’s fine.

Bedec Barn Paint, thank you Mike G

I’ve used MSP on radiators. No problem in withstanding the heat and no cracking or flaking. Thoroughly recommended.

Festool Track Saw Dust Port Improvement

That would be a great improvement. It’s the one thing about the otherwise excellent TS55 which is really annoying.

    Conversion - bathroom to en-suite

When I extended my bathroom to fit a new bath I did a lot of research on plastic piping and fittings. I can do copper pipe work but it seemed to me that plastic would be much easier to fit. The consensus of what I found was that quality plastic pipe and connectors has a lifetime approaching 100...

An Apple Watch is even quicker to pay by credit or debit card. No phone needed either.

What type of joints should I use for this fish tank stand?

I’ll just give my tuppence worth. My woodwork skills are very basic - many of the items I have made are simple frames clad in sheet material. Several posters have already mentioned that a simple box of ply screwed into corner pieces of CLS timber or similar will be more than adequate to bear the...

I don’t like our new induction hob

We’ve had ours about few months now, having replaced a gas hob. So much better - easy to clean, incredibly quick to heat a pan, very controllable. Also way safer than gas - you can’t inadvertently leave it on! But it is bit of a learning curve, particularly getting used to what setting produces...

"I've got a good idea, let's put it in the bin..."

You’re right Steve, the vendor is legally responsible for ensuring your goods reach you. They should reimburse you or replace the item and it’s up to them to claim from DHL.

Things have moved on in the last 8 years and KISS

I think you have to be selective. I have never used Facebook, personally I think it is the work of the devil. However, my wife uses it and she finds it very useful for keeping up with what is happening at a local level and for selling stuff. As for smart things, yes things have gone a little...

Changing opticians - a cautionary tale

Not sure if the RVI in Newcastle might be a slightly shorter journey for you but the eye clinic there is excellent. I have recurrent uveitis which flares up every so often and I have to get there pronto. Sometimes there is a longish wait but they know their stuff.

It’s bite the bullet time on a replacement cordless drill.

+1 for the Festool CXS. Beautifully (and ergonomically) designed with some clever touches like the hook which attaches to your belt and can be reversed for left handers. And the right angle chuck has got me out of trouble on more than one occasion.

    HDL LDL

My friend’s daughter in law is a consultant cardiologist and she says that if she had her way she’d put statins in the water supply. Presumably, unlike GP surgeries, she has no financial incentive to encourage their use.

    Building your own kitchen cabinets?

One of the great things about Blum fittings is their adjustability. When I posted my last photo I noticed one of the drawers was out of alignment with its neighbour. I installed a new induction hob a week ago and when I removed the drawers I must have knocked the mechanism at the front...

    Building your own kitchen cabinets?

Absolutely. I modified our kitchen a few years back. I kept the carcases but ditched the cupboard layout beneath the worktops and replaced with drawers, simply constructed from ply and MDF and supported on Blum runners. For people of advancing age, like me and my wife, bending down to rummage...

    Delivery company phrase translator

I have never, ever, had DPD screw up a delivery. Their app keeps you updated with the precise time your parcel is due within the hour time slot they give you at the start of the day. Despite the willingness of their staff round here to do their best, Royal Mail is appalling. Why can’t they and...

Regular readers will recall me saying no more renovations. Well.........

My understanding is that ring mains with 2.5mm cable to replace radials with 4mm cable were introduced after WW2 specifically because of the shortage of copper.

    Shower panels help please!

I’ve used Marmox and would fully recommend them. Very easy to handle, cut and fix.
