• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Church Notice Board

I am aware I haven't posted anything recently despite enjoying reading others WIP threads, so here goes. Our church has a notice board that is past its prime: So I have offered to make a new one. The metal supports seem reasonably solid so it seems sensible to reuse it. My first step was to...

    Mad capped plan?

My wife and I went easy today to look at property we might like to move to having been in our current house for over 20 years. We have found a barn conversion that was done about 30 years ago. It’s going to be a project if we take it on. The walls are solid stone and I assume with no cavity...

    Drawer retention device

I am in the process of making a small shelf with a drawer in it. The drawer is only going to be about 170mm front to back. I am keen that the drawer has some way of stopping it fall out if pulled too far. Can you point me to a design of how to do this please? Many thanks, Mark

    Clock hammers

I am again looking to call on the forum's collective wisdom. I recently helped my parents move a grandfather clock as they were having a carpet replaced. The chimes haven't been working recently, but when dismantling it I noticed one of the hammers has come off. The metal bar / wire has...

    BBQ trolley

My old gas barbecue has finally bitten the dust. Following a Which recommendation I have taken the radical step of buying an electric barbecue. I have yet to use it so time will tell if it was a wise decision. However I wasn’t after advice on the nature of the cooking device. I need to build...

    Sanding belts

I was using my Makita belt sander yesterday, which I don’t use very often and decided it wasn’t working well I had put a 40grit belt on and the wood was coming out fairly smooth and not removing my lots of material. I think the problem is with the abrasive belt not being very good as it hasn’t...

    MFT unit ideas?

I have been in the process of building this unit for a while and am reasonably pleased with it so far. I have a sheet of 18mm MRMDF to make the MFT top out of. The unit is just over 1.5 m wide and 60cm front to back. Most of the time I think 60cm will be fine, but I would like to be able to...

    Track saw cutting station

I am in the (gradual) process of replacing some shelving in the garage and trying to build a track saw cutting station. It should give me a bit more worktop space in the garage and make it easier to cut some bits of wood that are a bit large for the table saw but in a small garage. The unit...

    Rocking Horse

Well it is time I had a go at a WIP. I had offered to make a rocking horse for my Nephew and his birthday is approaching fairly fast. I have been thinking about it for a while and needed some reasonable ply for it without wanting to break the bank. I was lucky enough to get these offcuts at Avon...

    Pan lid handle

We have had a set of these pans for a few years, the handles on the pan lids have been getting gradually wobblier until today when one came off. The appear to be held through the glass lid via an aluminum rivet which has corroded away in the dishwasher. (It did say it was dishwasher safe). So...

    Floor fillers

You will be pleased to know I am not after recommendations for tunes to play, but for a flexible filler for my floor. I have been re doing our kitchen, which has a chipboard floor over some of it. I have had to lift the floor in places and am looking for a suitable filler for the screw heads and...

    Plumbing kitchen waste

I am just in the process of starting to think about replacing our kitchen. I fitted an IKEA kitchen 20 years ago and it has lasted well, however it is getting a bit tired in places. I don’t have the time or space to build one from scratch, so will be buying one, but probably looking to fit it...

    Bandsaw woes

I am in the process of sorting out some oak sleepers from some raised beds we had in the garden. The wood had rotted in places in the garden so I have replaced them, but stored the old sleepers under cover over winter to allow them to dry out. I am now in the process of cutting and planing them...

    Black woodstain

I have made this picture frame out of some beech for my son. We have decided it would look better if it was stained a black colour. Can anyone recommend a good product that is fairly straight forward to use? Thanks, Mark

    Pillar Drill Dust Extraction

My brother in law asked me what I wanted for Christmas, and remembering that he had just got a 3D printer, I asked him if could print me a positionable dust extraction pipe. I found one on thingverse which I emailed him a link to. Have got it I then set about thinking how best to fit it. I...

    Filling holes

Hi, I am in the process of trying to make a lamp table for the lounge out of some oak. It has one or two “features” in it as I did not have enough wood to avoid them as shown in the photo below. Can anyone advise me n the best way to deal with them? I don’t any off cuts to be able cut these...

    Finding the right battery

I am looking for a portable (the lighter the better) power source to provide 12v 12.5amps (150w) for 10 cycles of 2.5mins each. I believe this amounts to 5.2Amp Hrs. I have found some small 12v batteries storing 7ah which seem big enough BUT will it cope with discharging at 12.5amps? This is...

    Bandsaw stop for tenoning

I am sure this is not upto Mr Mastery’s standard of jigs, but I have been cutting some joints on my bandsaw which I wanted to stop at the same depth of cut consistently. I had tried a block of wood clamped to the bandsaw table, but it moved a bit and didn’t work that well. My Jet bandsaw has a...

    Roller stands

I am in the process of replacing the edging of our raised beds in the garden. I have bought some new oak sleepers, but decided that wood half the width would be fine to retain the soil. Therefore I am planning to rip the 100x200 sleepers down to 50x200 on my bandsaw. Following advice about...

    What have I done wrong?

We have had rats in our compost bin, so we had them rebuilt out of concrete blocks with stainless mesh for the floor. I then found they were going over the top, so have built a bifold lid with a wooden frame and some polycarbonate sheeting in the middle. The wood frame is just some decking...
