• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Anyone used a drop down threshold seal on exterior door?

If it's for a threshold on a period looking door theses drop down set up are almost invisible so are an ideal compromise. On my doors I supply my customers with we use a double Deventer seal, they do not look traditional but keep 100% of wind and rain out. The old reclaimed door on my house has...

Anyone used a drop down threshold seal on exterior door?

Here in southern Spain they are often used and in our climate they are ok. How they would hold up in an exposed Uk environment I cant say but at a guess with driving rain they might keep out 80% The ones here are basically a hardish rubber that comes down when the door is closed.

A bit of a head scratcher as it’s too hot to do real work.

Can’t say what happens today as I left uk 25 years ago but all the doors I ever hung and that’s 100s I cut the mortises on site. For a bit I used a Trend mortise jig like you show, unfortunately the Trend jig was not very good, I found a drill was quicker.

A bit of a head scratcher as it’s too hot to do real work.

Duke from what I’ve seen the first locks had a timber case , so guess originally it made no sense to let them in. See some old ones by the Benedictine monks, they used them on their trunks.

    Church Noticeboard

Oak would look nice but wouldn’t last like Iroko…..or if you want guarantees here or in heaven use Accoya, A 50 year ‘Above Ground’ / 25 year ‘In Ground’ Warranty. As others have suggested definitely use a lead roof in the design. Steve’s story of the church is similar to mine, I spent my youth...

    Hot Heat 2026

I’m in the same camp as Andy. Back in the 80s when I was in the uk I remember repairing outward openers that the wind had got behind it and trashed the hinged stiles. I remember my first meeting in the 90s with inward openers whilst travelling in Germany, I was amazed at the design and the...

    Wood suitable for window shutters.

Made these widow shutters last week, they are in Sipo. The original shutters were Pine and approximately 40 years old . Pine is absolutely fine if it’s slow grown. Only reason we changed the material from Pine to Sipo was to hopefully get a longer life span out of them, they are approximately 10...

    The Niff-Naff Cabinet; door hinging!!

Mike builds a teardrop (tongue box and conduit)

Mike you have a lot of sanding to do there so be careful in your choice of sander. Research HAVS hand-arm vibration syndrome, it’s not pleasant. I’ve used most sander over the last 40 years and my advice is don’t go cheap buy Mirka or Festool. I have the Festool Rotex 150, ETS 150/5 and the...

8mm diamond drill bit recommendations sought

Porcelain tiles are sometimes difficult and Porcelanosa porcelain is the worst especially when it’s thick. I had good luck with a special tungsten carbide bit designed for porcelain. Secret I found was keep the speed down super slow. Unfortunately can’t find a link to the bits I used, but...
