• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Base for step

I’m laying a new paved area outside these doors. Finished floor level will be 4 courses below damp ( which is also where the wooden door cill is) the paved area will be layer on a sub base of crushed hardcore and type one. I then need a step 2 courses below damp. My question is what would you...

    Bending steel garden edging

I want to install some metal garden edging, 3mm thick and 100mm tall. I need to bend some tighter curves than I think will bend by hand. Now I remember Mike doing this in his front garden, he made some formers that were smaller than the radius he wanted to allow for spring back and applied...

    Fence posts

I need to replace about 25 metres of fencing. In order to be "in keeping" it needs to be 6 feet, close board (not panels), wooden posts and gravel boards. Concrete posts and gravel boards are therefore out. Obv the weak point is where the post enters the ground at ground level. I've done a...

What data cable to run next to power cable to garage?

Background I am currently digging up the front garden to get an EV ultra cable from the consumer unit in the house to where I want an electric vehicle charger on the drive. It seems sensible that while I have the trench open to also drop in 1 or 2 data cables and make a small detour at the end...

Creating new tumbled edge on freshly cut limestone

I have limestone throughout my ground floor that is described as brushed and tumbled. These are large sized slabs 550mm wide and variable lengths. They are 20mm thick (regularised). They are designed to look like an old farmhouse floor or paving with many bumps, hollows, and a ragged (but...

How to paint old set of drawers

I have my eye on a chest of drawers on ebay, just the right size for where it needs to go. It is an oak veneered carcass and solid drawers/plinth. Some of the veneer has lifted and broken off so its far from perfect looking but thats OK as Mrs Bear wants them painted so I can use filler etc...

    Rat Poison

Have had reason to dig out my bait boxes today (black lunchbox size plastic box with a hole at each end). It has occurred to me I haven't used them in this house despite living here nearly 10 years. I have a bit of bait left but need to buy some more. Looking on Amazon it seems theres quite a...

    CNC routing service

Does anyone know of a cnc routing service where I could get a single word cut? Quite small, about 9x5 inches and a 7 letter word. In oak which I can supply or they can, don’t mind. I would guess this is small enough to be done mail order. I know we have some expert hand letter carvers on...

    The Bear's motor problem

So taking up Bobs invite above to post a motor problem: Background is my table saw is American, original owner had the motor swapped in the factory for one suitable for the UK before shipping it here. I am lead to believe this was around 1999/2000. I was told the motor is by a company called...

Cutting the bar on a DRO

Morning folks Does anyone know if it is possible to cut the bar on this type of DRO? I’m sure I can physically cut it but will it still work afterwards? Not sure of the black magic behind this so unsure of the consequences Thanks in advance Mark

    Circular saw blade sharpening

We've discussed this before but despite searching I only found one thread on the subject with only one suggestion. I need to get a tracksaw blade and a tablesaw blade sharpened. My old go to person is no longer doing it. Can anyone link to the previous threads where companies have been...

    Replacing a hanging tile

I've got 3 gables that are tile hung with plain clay tiles. One of the winchester cuts has fallen off for reasons unknown. Its only about 4 years old so in otherwise good condition. Is it possible to replace a single hanging tile without stripping the tiles above? There is remarkably very...

Left or right sided circular saw?

I'm looking to buy a new battery circular saw (not a tracksaw, happy with what I have there). It'll probably be makita as I already have several batteries. However I'm undecided whether to get a blade left or a blade right saw. Theres several reasons for and against each side, which also...

Where to sell metal working tools

I've just listed my Myford Super 7 for sale in the for sale section. It occurs to me that as much as I would hope this sells here that it might not as this is a woodworking forum predominantly. As far as I can tell there aren't any rules about listing for sale items elsewhere at the same time...

    What’s this?

Not mine, was a search result when looking for a sander. Described as a heavy duty horizontal sanding machine the disc itself is 2 foot across. What is it designed for? All I could think of was for sharpening long planer blades. Mark

    Knee pads

Anyone got any recommendations for a pair of knee pads please. Rather not spend more than £25 if possible and ideally from either toolstation or screwfix so I can easily pick up. There seem to be both hard shell and gel types available is one better than the other? I have the insert type...

How much is this Myford Super 7 worth?

I know we have the people on here with the knowledge to answer this question. Just looking for a ball park at the moment. Back ground is I bought this on a whim several years ago from a friend whos father (the owner) had just died. Though I wasn't actively looking for one it had been my...

    Flexi hose

Does anyone have any experience of the difference between the standard and heavy duty flexi hose that dust spares sell (100mm). I’m wondering if the extra for the heavy duty is worth it or not. Is the heavy duty too stiff for example or is the normal easily damaged? These 2...

    switch

I have a couple of workshop air filters. They are on 13 amp plugs but there is no separate switch, they have to be turned on and off at the wall socket. Where I am about to instal them the wall socket will be awkward to lean over to all the time. So I'd like to wire a switch into the power...
