• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Elu MOF 96 Router repair

There are few places that stock new parts a quick web search will bring them up. Parts are also usually available on eBay. I personally just buy another crappy donner machine for the bits I need which is usually far cheaper than buying spares. A 110V model is usually around £20 or less!

Hardest part of hand planing for me is planing edge square to face. Tips?

@thetyreman makes a great point. A longer plane does make it easier to flatten along the stuff’s length. For me a number 8 or 7 was too long and large for most stuff, although they come into their own if you straightening and edging very long stuff. I find a no6 is a perfect compromise for most...

Hardest part of hand planing for me is planing edge square to face. Tips?

A straight blade and with a fence won’t help much. When planing you will weight one side of the plane more than the other. In other words the push effort will be biased to one side. This causes a slight chamfer to be created in the edge your planing. The solution when trying to use a straight...

Osmo UV-Protection oil - still sticky and tacky

I used it regularly for around 15 years without any issues when I had oak doors and windows. I used to ‘slap’ it on, and yes if I got it in really thick it would take up to a week to fully cure in sunshine. It needs reapplying every couple of years, but it’s incredibly quick and easy to do so...

VFD to run 3-Phase on Single phase supply

I would suggest that if you need 15KW, then it’s worth looking into getting a 3ph supply. For about the last two years you no longer pay for infrastructure and instead just the connection. If your looking at fast charging a car or / and air source heat pump then often a domestic supply has...

VFD to run 3-Phase on Single phase supply

A DPC as I’ve already highlighted usually has speed control, soft start and braking.

New vs Old Machines + Optimum Drill Press

I’m surprised nobody has suggested a Startrite Mercury drill press. Brilliant drills, very accurate, used extensively in schools so reasonably rugged. They are selling for not much money these days, and although not a Meddings, a major step up from most of the new machines on offer. I’d keep an...

VFD to run 3-Phase on Single phase supply

You just use the normal start stop buttons on the machine.

VFD to run 3-Phase on Single phase supply

We’ve previously wired a DPC up to multiple 3 phase outlets, then you use one machine, the DFC has the same dial on the front as a VFD to reduce / increase the speed. You can if it’s powerful enough start up multiple machines at the same time, adjusting the speed control adjusts all machines...

VFD to run 3-Phase on Single phase supply

A DFC has virtually all of the same features as a VFD, so you can regulate speed, have soft start and braking, but it doesn’t need to be directly wired to the motor. You can use one without modifying your machine at all. If you intend to buy a few machines it’s often the most economical solution.

VFD to run 3-Phase on Single phase supply

I would like to suggest that a Digital phase converter is the best solution. It generates true 415V, 3 phase which enables you simply plug your machine into it without having to tinker with its wiring. A single DFC can be sized to run any / all of the machines you eventually collect.

    Cheshire Retired Tinkerer

For a good many years I’ve been lurking on another forum, and recently a member highlighted his wonderful restoration thread he had written on here. After taking a walk on the dark side, I was delighted to see a lot of ‘old lags’ from the other forum and realised where they had headed off to...
