A tool to make a tool to decorate a tool

The Hawley Trust have just added another digitised film of Ken Hawley talking, made back in 2008.

I only met him a couple of times but it was clear that the staff there had a challenge, to record as much of possible of the detailed knowledge of tools and tool making that was in Ken's head but not written down. So sometimes they persuaded him to sit and talk while a camera was on.

The camera work is wobbly and often out of focus, but I think we should be grateful for what they did manage to capture. Enjoy and learn!

Interesting to hear it referred to as threading. Commercial Jimping or checkering files are still available for the filing of parallel grooves, but intrinsically doesn’t give the same range of options as making your own

The ingenuity of making stuff is always fascinating, makes me feel better about my own less than linear path, where I’ll make something to make something else that will then get used for the thing I’m supposed to be making.
