• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Some might remember a couple weeks ago I was planning a shoe rack / box that got shelved (hah! :lol: ) because other jobs came up. No? oh well, lets move along then.
I had a rush job to make an elephant box for a friend, who wanted to give it to her work colleague who was leaving the country. I got 10 days notice. Not good, I dont respond well to pressure any more :eusa-naughty: Usually my boxes are done when I say theyre done, not just because its thursday.

Anyway, I managed the tight deadline, here it is.

My friend was very pleased, and showed the pictures to her daughter, who then contacted me to make ANOTHER elephant for her mother for mothers day. Another deadline, but nowhere near as tight this time.

Notice that after a previous discussion here, I have fitted separate tusks of maple this time. That was quite painless and although I dont really want to make any more hefalumps. if I do, they will have white tusks.

Back to the shoe box? oh no. Now I have to build 2 oak bed headboards for new divan beds.
Oak? Aint never done that before. Long learning curve on white oak. it cuts well on the table saw but is not impressed with a router table planing bit, not at all at all.

I am on the last day of making the second headboard, and would you believe that as I'm typing this I realise I havent taken any pictures of them to post?

Nick, yes, the second one had the knot, in fact when I thought I was finished I had realised I had a knot on both sides, and although I felt it gave "character" to the box, I was soundly outvoted by the judging panel and I had to rout 10 mm off both sides of the box and re skin the beast.

I now think this version is better suited to the recipient though. The knotty one would have been well received by a mystical goth maybe :D
 
Remembered to take pics of the headboard today.
I'm quietly pleased with myself. This is as close to furniture as I have ever ventured.
I've made two of these single divan headboards from white oak, with a wipe on poly finish.
There are errors (sorry, design features), but not too many of them.
I actually used chisels for their manufactured purposes :shock: :shock: :shock:

Now I've been and gone and done it.
'er indoors has decided that as I have now proved I can make something other than boxes, I need to make an oak bedside cabinet to match the headboards :shock:

This is getting perilously close to MikeG's territory. But at least I can guarantee there will be no computer driven plans, or even carving involved, :lol: :lol:
