• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I started the final waxing of this today.

The body is American Black Walnut and the panel for the lid is Pepperwood Burr veneer which I have not used before but will be doing so again.

Unfortunately I am out of Smarthinges so had to resort to some Brusso JB101s which are a faff to fit and don't look as good.

I've never heard of pepperwood. Where in the world does it grow?

The workmanship in that box is superb. :eusa-clap: :eusa-clap: :eusa-clap:
 
Ahhhh, right. Yes, I've heard of myrtle.
 
The back and sides of the Tenor Ukulele I made on the course earlier this year were of Myrtle.

That does look good!

Those black areas in the veneer - are they wood that is black or black resin infill? Never seen that veneer before.
 
The top of that box ( and the rest of it ) is something special and very different to Malc’s guitar back.

Is there some sort of spalting going on there?

Andy - the veneer from a burr which accounts for the difference.

Robert - I melted some shellac into the holes in the veneer.

Malc - very attractive grain pattern - a combination of fiddleback sycamore and flame mahogany.

Nice job on that box. I'd agree about the hinges; the Brusso one's don't look nearly as good and are definitely a real pain in the arris to fit. They also seem to leave a huge gap between the box and it's lid when opened; I also wouldn't have used the Brusso(?) knob on the lid but that's only a 'me' thingie :lol: - Rob
