• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I've never been sure what sizes are usually available in PAR timber and then came across this handy chart.

Am I not understanding that right or does it claim they are finished PSE sizes but don't forget it needs another 3-5mm off to make it PSE....?
Contradiction?
Cheers, Andy

The only time I've bought PAR it was finished sizes from British Hardwoods priced per linear metre and perhaps expensive but the finish and squareness was so good I could edge joint the boards with no further prep.

It is a bit weird. I now realise that I'm a bit ignorant but this is a useful explanation as to the differences. Every day's a schoolday....at least for me smile.png

I was taught that if you take sawn size say 102x25 you could finish 96x19 PSE. So 6mm (1/4”) off each direction. However there is no such a variety out there. Take 50x25 sawn. My local joinery supplier provides excellent 45x 22 PSE whereas Wicks would be barely 42x18.
My current approach is to ask and measure if it is a different supplier

The clear pine that I have been buying for the bee hives is ex sawmill.
It comes in at approx 154mm wide and 25.5mm thick. Lengths usually 3600mm.
The timber merchant then planes for me. I stand at the planer and he first takes off 0.5mm on one side then turns over and repeats. Inspection per side.
We generally end up with 23.5 to 22.5
They then trim the edges on the saw.
I regard this as PAR as the boards can be joined as is.
I will do a WIP at some stage showing how this excellent board reacts when sawing )(*&%%@!#%^
