bench grinder conversion, help

I have a Nu-tool 6" bench grinder that runs at 3000rpm. Is it possible to mount a drill chuck to it so that I can run a flexible shaft?
 
3000 rpm feels a bit fast to me but so far I've not found a max rpm spec of these shafts?

Grinder fixing needs to be very accurate and an adaptor will involve cutting two left hand threads in perfect alignment. If you intend the keep the wheel then registration of the adaptor could be difficult. You need to consider the risk of compromising the wheel guards.

Gut feeling is that unless you can buy something designed for your particular grinder as a kit, is that I would not start from here.
I'd use an old 4 pole (1425 rpm) fractional HP motor and start from there with an adaptor machined to suit.
Or look around for one of those complete units second hand where the motor hangs from a hook with the drive cable coming out of the other end. Local vide grenier but perhaps not in season at the moment?

Just looked at the Kirjes flexi shaft system and see that is 3000 rpm so assume the speed is ok/safe.

Their motor looks like a DE grinder motor without the wheels but at a stupid price?

Picking up a used DE grinder and removing the wheels could be another low cost starting point for your project.

Bob, thanks for reading Rob's thread and seeing where I was coming from. It was the stupid price of the Kirjes drive that made me think that I could use mine.

TBH I am not bothered about losing one of the stones on my bench grinder, I can't remember the last time I used it to grind anything.

So could something like this could be screwed in place of the wheel, providing of course I can work out the thread size on the shaft?

Best engineering solution would be to use the diameter of the shaft to ensure concentricity of the fitting.
A thread does NOT do this, it is designed for retention only.

Possibly best to drop the grinder off at chez moi when you next come over and collect it a day or so later when you return to Pompey for the ferry.

Yes that chuck is the sort of thing - we can get one organised for the job and choose the thread to match tooling I have or we could use a Jacobs Taper fitting direct depending on the shaft diameter.

I do not understand this Bob. If screwing a chuck onto the existing thread will not guarantee it being central then why are chucks supplied with a screw thread?

I would love too but Xmas is via my brother's place in Maidstone so we are going on the train. Not sure when we will be travelling again maybe not until August.

Here are some images of the thread on the end of the shaft. Can you help be identify the thread size?


 
The thread holds the chuck on, the registration surfaces hold it square and concentric.

The same applies to your grinder. There will be a flange and a plain section of the shaft to align the stone. The nut does nothing more than hold it on - trust me!

The thread could be metric - try a standard iso metric coarse M10 nut (M10 x 1.5 pitch)

The rest of the adaptor will not be easy to make remotely, I'd need the machine here. Maybe you need to find a local hobby at your end?

Valerie's uncle would have been able to do this but sadly he passed away earlier this year. Might just have to park this idea for now although I do like the extraction system offered by the Kriejes sander.

Alternatively I could just park the bench drill next to the lathe and use that :eusa-think:

I actually found a small bag of identifiable M12 nuts which fit perfectly.
