Broadband munching machine

Just got an email from our ISP advising us that we'd reached 68% of our Nov download which I found really surprising. 18GB yesterday

I know that 6GB is El Capitan but the other 12GB ?

The thought occurred to me that when I've searched for something in Youtube and played it, that it then seems to automatically go on and play the next item in the RH list. Then the next. And the next ..... At least that is my perception and so if I've not hit Pause or closed the Youtube window then that might explain the huge download.

Anyone else noticed that?

Not noted here but I have unlimited (theoretically) downloads.
Leaving the youtube running would possible run up a high total.

There used to be small add ins to meter your data consumption and give warnings etc certainly for PC not sure if such things are available for fruit powered computers.
Netmeter was one I used to use.

The BBC web site does a similar thing with some of the videos linking and auto playing down their list.
We also have unlimited broadband, as we have a game player who does some beta testing, we have used over 50G some months.

A good question but unless the cattle have got cowPads there is no risk of anyone stealing our wi-fi as we live in the middle of fields.

Putting 'stealing my broadband' into google brings up lots of suggestions so it may be worth looking at these.

It seems there are Mac tools for measuring usage.

At least you could see if the results correlate with your known usage?

Are you running Windows via a virtual machine in say VM ware?

I too upped to EL Kapitan not the Opel :lol: I had Windows 7 on the system and although suspended Windows 10 decided to take over after the Apple upgrade finished, which I thought was impossible as you have to give authority to restart :lol:
Lucky I am on unlimited download.

Thanks for the various suggestions. I have now downloaded PeakHour 3 which interrogates the router and so monitors our household usage (I think...still to be validated).

Just discovered in top rh corner of Youtube a PopUp that appears if you hover the mouse there called Autoplay. Mine was On and so I guess that explains things!

Aaargh..it's happened again! 10GB on Boxing Day. The only reason I cottoned on is because I've just bought an immaculate secondhand YouView Humax box. I've got it to test out my gut feel - namely that on-demand film services such as Netflix and Now TV simply don't have the type of films that we are interested in.

The fun thing is that the previous owner has forgotten to clear out his Netflix account details and so I can piggy-back off his subscription if I want to. :twisted: (I won't).

It will also be interesting to see how a more up-to-date PVR works as the old ones are getting a bit flakey/long in the tooth.
