• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

My wife wanted a box to keep her candles in so I knocked this up this afternoon. Straightforward but also very enjoyable to make.

Yes, it is oak. It's just had a few coats of clear wax to finish.

... and I'll be progressing to fork 'andles next weekend @Woodbloke

Some things are just........ right. Here is a box which is is simple, utilitarian, and very elegant. It's not trying hard to be something else. It's got its structure on display, showing the craft that went into its manufacture. The lid is simple. There is nothing fussy about the wood, the design, or the workmanship. I like this a lot. :eusa-clap: :eusa-clap:

Now that’s exactly what I was thinking but couldn’t express.

+1 to the above. Not only is it beautifully made, it will still work in a hundred years time. Which is just as well, since candlelight seems to be making a comeback since the cost of electric light has increased so much:

"In an effort to tackle the price hike, the Masons Arms in Camelford, Cornwall is solely lit by candles every Monday"

you have a good point andy, could this be an opportunity to make and sell candle boxes I wonder?

That is very nice. :eusa-clap:
If my wife sees it I'll be under pressure to replace the shoebox that houses our candle stock.

Randomly looking through my 1968 copy of Charles Hayward's Period furniture Design came across this, might come in handy!

That's a great example of how good Charles Hayward's books could be. Although the original item is unusual, all the information you need to make one is there on a single page, beautifully clear and succinct.

I inherited my copy from a "country cabinet maker" 35 years ago, he adapted some of the details from this book into his own offerings, working from an old farm barn, as I do, however, he was quite well known for his furniture, at the time, in the North Norfolk area, got some catching up to do.
