• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Dowelmax - First Use.

Over the weekend I used my new Dowelmax jig for the first time.

Absolutely brilliant bit of kit.

I've always shied away from dowels - accuracy was more luck than judgement, and using more than two dowels in one run meant I'd normally end up re-drilling holes oversize.

This jig makes things so easy it almost feels like I'm cheating :D

This has just been wiped with white sprit to show the grain - the board isn't fixed down yet.

One essential thing I did on mine was to scribe a centre line down the long axis of the main block. This makes it then very easy to align it in say, the middle of a long board where it would otherwise be very awkward. I can post a few pics later on if of any help?

Well, if you're going to use dowels it certainly helps if you can drill the holes in the right place.

It sounds like an excellent idea - I'll take it to work and use the cnc machine to engrave a line on either end.

This is what I did on my Dowelmax block; a scribed centre line down both axes (right terminology; I checked :D ):

...and I also prepared a bit of maple with 'oles so that it could be bolted to the side to side of the block. It also has a knife line cut in the centre to correspond with the one on the block:

Now suppose f'rintstance you have a wide bit of board (could be the side of a bookcase) even wider than this bit of gash 150mm wide pine and you need to put a bit of stuff at right angles in the centre (or wherever):

All you have to do is G-cramp the Dowelmax block in place, having firstly lined up the X-hairs and then drill your 'oles.

I recollect I used this method on the wine rack I did just before Christmas. Easy peasy and spot on for accuracy - Rob
