• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Dropbox - opinions please

A friend has persuaded my wife to download dropbox which she thought would make it easier to receive and share photos .
1) am I correct in thinking this is something to do with GoogleChrome ? ( which my IT man has stated is not really a good idea on a PC ...?)
2) Can we have general opinions about dropbox please .

No idea if Google have acquired Dropbox but even if they have I don't see any problem. Dropbox is basically a method of having your photos get automatically uploaded from your PC (or smartphone) to a website from which you can post links to people so they can easily access them.

You can also directly link a photo directory to an individuals dropbox which means the two of you can automatically share anything uploaded. It works with most documents and not just pictures.

I use it to share song files (from logic) with a mate of mine in the US because the audio data is too large to be sent by general e mail programs (blows the allowable file size limit. Also it can be handy for other larger document types including video.

The downside is it slows everything down when it attempts to logon and synchronise your desktop with its web interface which I find a bit of a pain. So I tend not to use it's auto features but manually upload larger files only when I need to.

It is a handy way to get large files onto the internet though. For general purpose photo stuff on the web I tend to use photobucket.
 
I've had a little play with Dropbox since we set up this forum and like Bob I think it is better suited as a method of sharing large files rather than as an image host.
I also prefer photobucket.

Can't comment on the google chrome question as I am on a Mac.

That's it. Otherwise a right PITA to use and very slow.

I use Flickr for my photos.
 
We use Dropbox at work for swapping files and documents between International groups. These can be as large as several Gb in size for some data files. Just like having another folder on your desktop and works well for us. No idea how secure it is however - all of the stuff we use it for is non critical.

I would say Drop box has its uses, but generally I also find it a bit cumbersome and tedious to use. It should work just fine for your application, but there are also other ways to approach the problem. As for Chrome, that is all I use on all my devices (laptop, iPad and Samsung S5) I know some people will disagree but I won't use anything else unless the developers start screwing up badly. M2CW! :mrgreen:
 
Echoing all of the above, I also noticed that if you use it as off-site image hosting for fora like this, it seems to make the thread take a long time to load- even on a 38Mb/s ADSL line.

That said I agree with the above it's very handy as a "quick and dirty" file sharing system.

I'm also on a Mac but administer several PCs at work and installed Chrome on them all without issues. Much better than Firefox (unless you like several updates a week)
 
Best solution is to get your own domain and hosting deal. I pay around 50€/yr for a package that gives me essentially unlimited (hundreds) of email addresses, multiple domain names if I wanted, essentially unlimited web sites and blogs, somewhere to store things such as photos for instant access on line etc etc.

You can upload photos and then put the urls into postings here just like dropbox etc., but you have full control.

I believe Robert has something similar.
 
Dropbox is fine for file hosting in the cloud and does what it says on the tin.

I don't know who your IT guy is but you might want to consider getting a new one… Google Chrome is now and industry standard browser and used for both consumer and Enterprises alike. We use only IE and Chrome in my organisation of 13,000 UK users so I'm not entirely sure what his issue is with it… I suspect a little misunderstanding.
