• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hiding things from your wife

Mont Blanc!
I had to make do with a new year's eve proposal in the Traveller's Rest, Glenridding followed by a new years day hike along Striding Edge and Helvellyn.
Well overdue a return visit.

SWIMBO told me that we were getting married after we'd known each other for six weeks :o and we were married at Woking Registry Office on 26th Oct 1981, so we've just had our 40th anniversary which we'd didn't celebrate, nor did I buy her anything...didn't even get a card from the kids.

I later found out that we were married on the 100th anniversary at almost the same hour as this famous event in Tombstone, USA - Rob

I had to have a minor operation and cancelled the date because I had a holiday booked so it was rescheduled to September, I later found out that the one of the new student nurses who had started only the week previously had been tasked to sort me out after the anesthetic, theatre gown off, pyjamas on etc. while of course I was still out for the count, so fate I suppose. I was in for a week so lots of banter with all the nurses and before leaving I gave them all a cuddle, this one hung on so I asked her out. My girlfriend at the time was definitely not best pleased.

From hiding stuff, to weddings....hmmm. I am a bit rushed (insurance details) at the mo', details will come at another time, but I was wed in the hospital..flat on me back..in traction. Escape not possible. :eusa-naughty:

On the other hand when we met she was a student nurse drinking cheap Babycham (remember those? ) after we got married it changed to whiskey and wine.

Ah! Like me, I guess you've also learned that there is nothing better in life than to wake up on a Sunday morning in bed with a newspaper, a cup of tea, and a State Registered Nurse! Not necessarily in that order.

That's a lovely gift. Ours is another 6 years away, but looking for ideas.

You bunch of romantics!
My then girlfriend and I lived in a town 20 miles from the city where we both worked and studied.
We decided a flat would be cheaper than the travel.
Got a flat about 100 yards from girlfriends nurse training school and paid a deposit pdq.
That evening we told my mum, she said she wasn’t at all happy about us not being married and she knew gf parents would be the same.
I turned to gf and said we may as well get married then? Ok she said. That’s romantic!!

Very pragmatic Lurker. Good man!
My story starts in 1976. Gf and I both working at the same place, she living locally with parents and me in a rented flat a few miles away. Weekends spent together at my place. Roaring inflation really getting a grip and common sense said I needed to buy a property to capitalise on the inflationary effects.
I was earning about £2.5k and mortgages were typically 3 x earnings max but houses near to work were £10k plus.
Combining gf wages with mine made buying a house viable so the following we did.
Set up a joint bank account for all mutual expenses so if it went t*its up, we had a documented record of who paid in what so we could easily sell up and sort finances out equitably.

1980 arrives and we decide we would be better off with the married persons tax relief and it made sense to get married as we seemed to be getting along ok and anyway keeping a 3 bank accounts going was a bit of a waste of effort. So Nov 80 we did the deed. 1 bank account, far fewer ledger entries and lower tax bill. Result!

The lack of an engagement ring came up from time to time so when SWMBO 50th birthday arrived we had a few days in Amsterdam and I bought her an eternity ring. As I said at the time, It seems like an eternity, so I got you a ring to prove it!

40+ years or so of marriage and SWMBO has a few health issues but there was that "sickness and health" clause in the deal that we did not pay much attention to at the time. But a deal is a deal so I'm doing a bit more caring than ideal these days but we still seem to be getting on OK and it was a good excuse to give up work 10 years early and take up woodwork.

Whats all the romance stuff with you lot? I'm an engineer at heart so have the practical approach foremost in everything.

Bob

Interesting read on how you met and got hitched.
Agree with Bob on the practical approach, the wives do not always appreciate that approach.

We also both worked for the same company, dated without anyone knowing, until one weekend we went bundu bashing in long grass and picked up a few ticks. We both went to the onsite work clinic to get checked out. The nursing sister just could not wait to tell everybody!

We married on 1st February 1975 (it’s in my ring so I can’t forget) which is the last month of the tax year, so I derived the full year married tax benefit - typical beanie)

Anniversary is usually an eat out lunch or dinner.
For the 25th I surprised her with a satellite dish, decoder and a DSTV subscription, so there was lots of entertainment when I travelled for work
I will more than likely plan something for the 50th.
The last couple of years it has been a sad anniversary as it is also the day we had our youngest sons funeral.

The romance of a joint bank account, great stuff Bob.

We not only worked for the same company, in the same office, but when this petite fresh faced international graduate trainee arrived she shared my desk. The rest as they say is histoire.

I met my better half at work like many, she a Chartered Accountant and me a fresh faced IT Geek, she was sent down by a manager with a spreadsheet issue. I fixed it over the course of about 90 mins (was a 10 min fix but I dragged it out because I fancied her and we seemed to be getting along :eusa-whistle: ).

It cropped up in conversation that we both liked pub quizzes, and she was going to one that night. Imagine her surprise when me and a mate just happen to appear at the same pub quiz...

A few other conversations and I asked her out officially a couple of weeks later and we bounced along nicely for 2 years before buying a house together. Three years and another house move later and I proposed two weeks before we went to New York because I knew she wanted a Tiffany engagement ring when the time came, so I thought why not buy it in the authentic store.

Married in a castle just outside Edinburgh 3 years later and the rest is history. Together for 25 years this year, married for 17.

@Wallace - WHAT! Is she not over the moon with the PK?

My wife has not stepped foot in my shed in 7 years, ever since I started playing with old iron. I do occasionally show her some pics of one and she says, 'that's nice'. She does like the fact that I buy her the odd hand bag from the proceeds of a machine. She was eyeing up one in her favorite shop, Mulberry. So whilst she was in the car I said I had to go somewhere briefly, and came back with it. She has a room devoted to them. Bizarrely she very rarely puts proper clothes on because shes out of fettle but she does like to buy bags and clothes on the of chance she's having a good day.

Thats a coincidence. Just come back from the UK after celebrating our 50th
We managed to get 10 people who were in the original photos to get there, oldest87, youngest 54.
March 4th was ours.
I never buy her stuff, she can get what she wants, what she really wants, without any hindrance from me. But she's never been known to refuse a hotel holiday

You sound like a kind husband Wallace.

Sunny, congrats on 50 years. That's a big deal.

Mine, bless her, doesn't expect anything on our wedding anniversary. Just as well because neither of us can remember the day or year

If you believe that mate then you’re not as smart as I thought you were! :D
