Iron air brick

Does anyone have a source for high quality iron air bricks less than £50? Victorian/Edwardian style. I’ll add my own insect mesh on the interior if necessary, but it’d be good if it already handled it and definitely must not let rodents through without me doing anything.

I don’t know Mike. I came across them when we were staying with friends in Oswestry. They do a lot of metal sculptures and certainly make some stuff at their visitor centre but I certainly didn’t see a foundry!

The cost of making such things in this country given the relatively small market means that it’s not an economic reality. There used to be a pretty large foundry near Faversham in kent, a company i worked for had stuff made by them, it just couldn’t compete with chinese and indian imports and folded. I needed cast iron guttering for my place ended up getting it from Hargreaves they say it “ comes” from their foundry, which when questioned is revealed to mean the chinese/ indian imports are unloaded at and then despatched from their foundry site. Thye could make it for you but it’ll be about 4 times the price of the imports.

Best place for a genuine english cast iron airbrick is the salvage yards, when i looked they started at £60 plus vat and post. The auction site cheapies are way less and once painted and fitted look fine to all but the expert eye.

Looking at the link above , the items look no different to the many listings on the auction site.

I regard the implication as sharp practice if not downright dishonesty, makes me wonder if trading standards dept is asleep.

There is a firm in Grimsby called Fowler and Holden could make some, but the pattern would cost, unless they already had one in the store of course, I thought they only did man/woman hole covers, but surprised to see they make all sorts of parts for bridges and engineering. I know they cast on site as the smell of TCP is a giveaway.
If you want to keep the cost down, how about buying one of those long drainage grids and cutting it to length? I’m sure they must come in different widths

Mike. Trading Standards is now something of a unicorn service. They have outsourced initial reporting to Citizens Advice (largely volunteers) who filter what they consider to be cases worthy of following and otherwise obfuscate and prevaricate.

That’s not correct at all Adrian. Citizens Advice do not filter what can be referred to Trading Standards. CAB advice on consumer rights and Trading Standards deal with traders who don’t comply with consumer legislation.

You’ve had a swipe at local government workers and now CAB staff today - there’s really no need. Are you just having a bad day or have you concluded everyone involved in any form of public service is feckless?

I give my time up to support CAB and our advisers don’t obfuscate or prevaricate. They help people across a whole range of issues and they have to do it efficiently as demand massively outstrips supply.

I had excellent service from our local Trading Standards ...contacted via NCC..and they were instrumental in blocking eBay from selling some inferior TENS pads that caused skin irritation.

I now have a direct contact with them and an open invitation to contact them again re any trading issues.

I didn't need to involve CAB.
