Loose tenon joints (without a Festool Domino)

Has any one any experience of using loose tenon joints without a Festool Domino ( I would quite like the Festool one, but haven't yet convinced myself to part with that much money)?

and seems very cheap, so was tempted to give it a try.

I was also wondering about a good source of wooden loose tenons to use with it. Is there a good place to buy them or do people buy a suitable bead cutter bit for them and make their own?

Any advice and thoughts welcome.

Gosh, Mark. That's a hard call given the price. But TBH at that price, I'd try it.

Having said that....when you buy into the Domino, you're buying into a whole new 'ecosystem'.

Wee Woo, Roger is right about the Domino. Once you have one, you realise that they are a very fast and accurate tool. No set up at all really. Some people make dominos, but I don't bother. I buy them in big bags for the sizes I use most. I like them because they are slotted all round and compress nicely and hold glue well.
Pretty cheap. Unless you are in furniture production or something, a bag lasts a long time.

I do make my own dominos. at the end of a project I look through my offcuts and wizz them down to size on the table saw and round the corners on the router table leaving the minutest flat on the narrow sides to allow glue to escape. I keep them in sticks and trim them to suit the job as they are used.

I'm not such a huge fan of the domino machine as many seem to be, it's ok but I'm yet to be convinced enough to use it regularly and give it the cult status it is awarded by others.

Hi Mark,

I think the absence of the YT link might be because you're on a Mac and/or using Safari which no longer supports Flash, which this forum's software uses for linking YT videos.

I have the same issue, too. So, when I post a video, I also post the url for the YT video for those like us. I'd like to think a few more might consider us when posting vids.

Well having procrastinated about it and balked at the price of the dF500 I have finally gone rash! I came across someone selling one second hand at a reasonable price. My dearly beloved agreed to the investment, but I don't think she bought the argument that it is a free tool as you can sell them for more than you pay for them.

All being well should pick it up tomorrow night, after which I will feel broke but have something new to play with. I suspect if I had bought the jig I was looking at originally, I would always have felt disappointed that I didn't have a Festool Domino.

I'm increasingly starting to use slots cut on the router table and a ply insert. It's actually easier that using a Domino for certain applications. This little cabinet is a case in point:



You can just make out the slot on the top of the side that's already been glued and plywood inserts are a lot cheaper than Domino's - Rob
