• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

My venerable (1956) ML8’s solid belt has started to split..probably its original. I read elsewhere that link belts that are suitable are available - does anyone have suggestions for specification and a source

I think you want "A -Section" link belting, the length will be dependent on how your lathe is set up because obviously you could buy the lathe without the stand originally and make your own which would dictate how long the belt is.

Link belting is not cheap stuff as you will find out, and I believe it's sold by the metre and you will likely need a tad more than that so you'll end up buying two metres worth. A regular belt would be much cheaper but it is a bit of a headache to drive the shaft out to replace it.
 
There's at least one retailer here selling a link belt specifically for the ML8, in the 1.2m or 1.3m lengths that they reckon you'll need. As Dan says it's not cheap, but may beat having to buy two metres from elsewhere.

I can't vouch for them personally, just found it a while back because I'm anticipating a similar need in the future.
 
This is probably ridiculous. In the past I have cut and joined rubber O rings and similar ( for use as drive belts) with superglue successfully. It may work for V belts, save you spending a lot or taking the head apart.
Btw I fitted a Fenner linked belt to my Myford 40 years ago and still no sign of it giving up. Depends doesn’t it!

Firstly I'd measure it, circumference and width, before it falls apart.

Open the dropbox link on the WH2 home page (top right) and scroll down to the Useful Links folder. Click on the @Buyers Guide ... link and have a look at page 5.

The suppliers listed under 'bearings and belts' should be able to supply one.

If you find a suitable replacement, please post it here.
