One for the kids

I promised myself some time ago that I’d make ‘nice’ boxes for each of our 3 children. I didn’t just want to make bog standard stuff and it took me a while to find a design that I was comfortable with.

These are zebrano with maple insert and highlights. The zebrano is a bit of a pig to work with and my scrapers got a fair bit of a workout.

Hinges are smartbutt and pricey (especially the polished stainless steel) but they are extremely good.

Reasonably pleased with the finished product.

The curves to the sides has me intrigued ... how, may I ask, did you do that?

I've a piece of wood, rescued from somewhere many years ago, with that curve. Often wondered what I could use it for - now I know . I should get one box out of it .

Mitres ‘reinforced’ with dominoes. Normally it’s just mitres but I found the shaping meant clamping was difficult and the joints kept slipping. Dominoes prevented that kept it all together.

No, I use a self adhesive velvet. Card cut to size then the velvet applied and then all stuck on with copydex

A couple of initial curs on the table saw and then a plane. Tearout was pretty awful so I ended up using cabinet scrapers to refine and remove the tearout. I do enjoy using a sharp scraper, - sad or what!

Looks fantastic! I tried lining a jewelry box with felt but turned out pretty shoddy.

Very tasty! Never used Zebrano but I've also heard that it's awkward stuff to use; the ss hinges are great too but you might have had to remortgage the house to buy them - Rob

I don’t use leather anymore but find it equally applicable to other materials. I’m afraid felt can be horrible to line with, depends very much on the quality but not something I’ll use these days.

At over £200 for 3 pairs I felt I needed my bump’s feeling but these are special (to me anyhow) boxes and I’m happy with the result.
