Just getting bits together to make a quaich for my son’s forthcoming wedding.

Turned a pattern of the I/D for the bowl

The bit of oak might be the bowl….or a test run,we’ll see!

First problem is mounting the wood to turn the outside, I have decided to use a faceplate and need a flat stable surface to work with. Found a bit of worktop that might work.

Looking ahead, I think I want a high gloss finish and I am thinking about lacquer but have no experience, any suggestions?

Have you ever used a spay acrylic lacquer?

I used it on the Prosecco clock I made a while back. Apart from the smell it was easy enough to apply.

I was going to buy a spray can. Any recommendations as to what to buy?
Do you rely on the sprayed dry lacquer for the Sheen or can you polish that up?

Try some Odies Oil. You can purchase a small tester pot for next to nowt from the website and it goes a very, very long way. I'm still using my teeny tiny pot on the current JK project - Rob

As I said stinks to high heaven.
Obviously try on a test piece first.

Screwed sacrificial wood to faceplate and trued it up, not sure if I will regret such a thick piece. Added a dowel to centre things up and add grip. Did the glued newspaper sandwich trick and left it clamped to dry.
Off on a vineyard tour this afternoon.

Not a great deal of progress but I have turned the outside of the “bowl “ and lacquered (something that I never done before) using Andy P recommendation.

Job done.
I was anxious about this but it was easy enough. First time I have used lacquer on wood but I was pleased with the results.

Looks good Jim. How have you secured the quaich to the oak bowl?
As you know I hope to do something similar , inserting the quaich into a lignum vitae lawn bowl.

I stuck it in with a gob of silicon sealant, it didn’t need much as it was a snug fit.
