• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. Replacing carbide inserts in Silent Power block

A few months ago, I rotated the inserts in my Hammer Silent Power block but not really done very much planing since then and mainly on narrow stock. A slightly wider board suggests that I’ve got some of the inserts not right :( . But how the Hell you check out which one I have no idea.

Then I noticed that there were bits missing from one insert……so I’ve bought a new set. But…big but…need to make sure they are all the same level. But how ?

Plane a wide board (or a narrow board and inspecting it, move it along the width of the machine and plane again, inspect again, repeat) and look at the surface and see where exactly it is causing issues, then inspect the cutters in that area. I would presume so long as the cutter seating is very clean there isn’t much to go wrong with installing the cutters, they should self align with the countersunk screw.
 
Rodger, if there's a build up of resin around the insert that can mess your seating up.
CMT and Felder make a resin remover.

Dan...bang on the money ! One doesn't need to faff around with rotating the block by hand and trying, with a metal edge, to see the high points. So obvious when you think about it...witness marks are there on the timber ! :eusa-doh:

Turned out to be that broken insert....obvious again but not before me ordering a new set of inserts. And not before me realising that I had a spare fitted to the block :eusa-doh: :oops:

So..insert swapped. Screw used to hold the spare insert safely stored away in the 'Drawer of Special Things'.

You mean the drawer with the rip in the space time continuum, just like the one in my shop? [emoji849]
 
provided the place for the insert is clean and free of resin those inserts will accurately fit every time....
everything being machines on CNC....even the tips are so accurately made...

Exactly so. The same drawer where tape measures and pencils go to.
