• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. I get emails from RC and the latest pitch is a mini shooting board. It is like this:

It is only, wait for it.........$180. :shock:

Now, call me old fashioned, but I am of the school which says, "If you can't make a shooting board, you probably can't make anything requiring a shooting board."

I was going to say I would have expected his signature on it, then clocked it in the top corner. :lol:

I am of the same school pf thought as you on this, but then as T says, there are LOTS of US (in particular) woodworkers with lots of spare cash who will lap these up.
 
But if I buy one of those, what can I do with the nice smooth flat bits of MFC I have saved from skips? They're perfect for the job!
 
I have just looked at cosmans shop, he is taking the p even before you look at the prices.
On the other hand he is cleverly exploiting a type of woodworker I have never come across.
Everything is basically off the shelf at half the price elsewhere or stuff most of us make without ever considering buying it.
Classic Harry Enfield "I saw you coming" material.

Maybe it's one of those talking point items you display on the wall and ask visitors to guess what it is.

Andy, that set up is useless frankly. You need one of those special planes just for shooting board, where the handle is on (what would normally be) the side. I have watched the Rob Cosman video on that 8-)

I do think he is a skilled craftsman, but it seems clear that he is largely in the teaching and toolmaking businesses these days. Not sure if he has a reputation for making furniture etc, other than very fancy woodwork benches. I've seen him (on video) flatten off big boards and such like using just hand tools, so he clearly has good skills.

I totally agree. Shameful that the board did not come with with one. Or maybe Rob forgot that too :)

I remember it well now; I've got a bit of that woodgrain Formica on my current 'shooter.

Sincere and undiluted apologies about failing to provide an adequate plane...nice try, no cigar! :lol: :lol: - Rob
 
AJB you could easily make one for a fraction of that cost, it wouldn't be too hard to make.

Do you think so? I would have to find some detailed instructional plans, then I would have to find some suitable wood, and it would require a major uplift in my skills to be able to get the hooky bits square with the flatty bits.

The catch 22 for me is I have no idea how to make those lovely dark bits nice and square without having a shooting board. Do you see my dilemma here.....?

Just as an aside, I prefer to have a little "run off" area behind the fence to help bigger planes stay in a straight line as they finish the cut. Here's mine:

I'll soon be making a new one as this one is wearing. There are slight curves where there used to be straight lines.
 
Well a new shooting board was on the list of needed before i continue, but i think ill just order that one instead, saves on time which is an expensivee commodity. ;)


Need to hone the stanley 4 back to flat too, i needed it for general work recently and put a camber on it (3 planes on the 1 job meant i could get it done without sharpening, because Im lazy).
 
I was also shooting the “end grain” on a piece of MDF yesterday! It seemed a bit excessive but it allowed me to sneak up on a precise fit.

I've been using this shooter for a few years now. It's dead easy to make and more importantly, when it goes out of kilter (and they all do eventually) it's dead easy to bring back to 'true'. When the end of the fence wears (as they always do) just tap it along a fraction and shoot square. The only additional thing I've done is to add a Formica 'runway' for the LN51 - Rob
 
That's an interesting clip. I've seen either it or something similar before I think. Personally I like to shoot away from me across the bench rather than along it. And his mitre design would not work for me as it would be guaranteed to move in my hands. I do like the shallow stop in his design, and I used to use a variant of that when I used to make fingerboards for guitars.

Many designs refer to the L shape along the length. I've occasionally thought about letting a stainless steel low friction strip in, but never got round to it on any of the shooting boards I've made over the years. For mitres I made a dedicated one, as they take up very little room and are less faff than using a clamp.

I started this thread as a bit of a joke, (obviously - sorry tyre man) but as is often the way it has revealed some interesting ideas.

Thank God! I bought two off the back of your recommendation! Bloody great they are too. Now I just need to work out what they do!
 
It is obvious what they do: you put them out in a prominent place when your friends come round (if they can remember where you live after the past year) making sure your funky new workshop LED lights shine directly onto the RC signature. Leave the price tag on. Any actual use invalidates the warranty anyway.

Also they are very good for balancing half a dozen beers on apparently. Ideal for Oktoberfest activities. Much more reliable than a Bavarian serving wench.
 
He sells special holes that you fit yourself for holding the glasses. Mans thought of everything.
 
Never able to resist the temptation to totally and completely over-engineer everything I make, and having access to the aluminium scrap bins at work, here's mine :D

How is your plane blade not planing aluminium, then?
 
Theres a 0.2 wide lip milled into the edge that the solid part of the sole rides against,
