• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I made a watch box out of a sycamore off cut a few months ago and it ended up just sitting on my bench. My sister in law saw it and asked if I could make a matching jewellery box for her niece’s birthday. Here is the result ...

The box lids are birds eye maple. I like the external view of the black line stringing but not so much the way it looks on the edge when opened and need to refine that for future pieces. The lining is pig suede and the finish is simply hard wax - Alfie Shine from Workshop Heaven which is one of my favourite finishing products.

It was a bit of a rush but payment in the form of a bottle of 12 year old Balvenie Doublewood made it worth the effort :D
 
Robert, I'd really appreciate it if one day you could post a detailed WIP of your stringing/ inlay process. I've never done it, but have always thought I should. Great boxes!

Seriously - I have another one to make in January so will knuckle down and capture as I go along.
 
Well they look rather nice, very well done! Is the birds eye maple a solid piece or veneer? I am struggling with some veneering at the moment and can confirm that a vacuum bag for storing clothes in is not really any good for veneering timber...... :oops: Back to a piece of ply and 20kg of cast iron weights for me, wish mine looked as good as yours!
 
Rather good!! I do like Birds Eye Maple and got hold of some very well figured stuff recently from Workshop Heaven. Rather pricy, but well worth it - Rob

It is veneer Over an MDF substrate. I have a veneer press (a bit like an apple cider press) but clamps or a heavy weight work just as well.

MDF is of course the work of the devil but no one knows it’s there!
 
They look fantastic. How do you intend to refine the black stringing to hide it when the box is open? I am about to embark on some box making for the first time and I would also appreciate a WIP if you have the inclination.
