• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Unfortunately I didn't take any 'photos but I knocked up a trick box for my granddaughter on Friday, gave it to her yesterday morning and because I'm always making small items she suspected nothing. If you have ever heard how loud a 10 year old can scream you'll understand why my ears are still ringing. She caught out her mum later who doesn't much like spiders. :lol:

I've taken the pic of the internet where you can buy these for peanuts but dead easy and quick to make. It's best if you bend the wire and position the knob so the "spider" touches the fingers. I didn't have a plastic spider so knocked one up on the fly tying bench which was more realistic with floppy legs. Great fun for young kids I'm sure this box will end up at school when they go back.

Brilliant, I might make one before I go and see my 91 year old Mum next week, she'll have a fit, hmm maybe not such a good idea then!
 
Brilliant fun.
Saw one of these repeatedly causing mayhem on FB the other day, I’m sure I wouldn’t like it touching my finger even if I knew what it was!
Are we preprogrammed to fear spiders?

I suggested trying it out on my mother in law who is 96, I cant print my wife's response on an open forum. :lol:
 
Thanks Bob, my box from a plank with minimal tools project has just found a purpose. Hope I can find a suitable spider.

Maybe a few real ones around where you live Andy. :lol:

Some stiff copper or std wire or long panel pin or you could even tie it directly on the the end of the main wire with care, clamp it in a vice or pliers and find some wool or thread of a suitable colour. Wrap it around the wire to build up a body and head after tying in some thick thread or thin rubber band for legs and tease out fibres to make it look hairy, colour with sharpies if needed. You can use superglue to stick the legs and ends of wool if easier. You will be surprised how realistic it will look at first glance. :)

Easier for me as I tie fishing flies but that method works and it's when it touches the finger that people get a shock. :lol:

Personally I detest spiders. My wife makes me go to places like the rain forest (various) where the horrible things run wild and are LARGE. We did tarantula wrangling with a stick to encourage the vile creatures out of their underground burrows. In one place there was a goliath spider lurking on a hand rail. It was the size of a plate. I used to check under the tables and chairs. At night creepy insects rain down onto the bug netting. :shock: :o Hated it.

Still a fun box though. I might have to try making one.
 
I was once on a singles holiday in Greece. First evening, everyone on their best behaviour. Very proper.
There we were, making polite conversation (this was long before the orgies had started) drink in hand, "What do you do?" etc, when I laughed out loud, as this bloke had a big hairy saucer-sized rubber spider on the front of his shirt.

Then it moved.

I hit the spider to knock it off, he wondered why this total stanger he'd met only an hour earlier has assaulted him and we took it from there.

I went Funnel web spider hunting, well poking with a long stick the last time we were in OZ. Never found any but the bu**ers found their way into the pool. My brother's neughbour had a sizeable collection in jars, horrible things but apparently it's also the little red back ones that find their way into your shoes that you have to watch out for.

My wife is terrified of spiders, also crane flies (daddy long legs) which she sees as speders with wings. Many a time I've come down to see a large bowl she's thrown over a spider, once she used a collander not realising it would escape through the holes. :lol:
 
I don't mind spiders at all and I read somewhere that all spiders in the UK are venomous; it's just that they have minuscule 'teeth' (or whatever) that won't penetrate human skin so your safe Adrian, to pick one up and give it a cuddle :lol: - Rob
