• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Spindle moulder guide ring (?) help

Well, I blame that Sam Q and Lons ;) They came round for a visit the other day and I mentioned that I was thinking about making up another template to use the spindle moulder to carry on shaping a bit more of the volute. Obvious concerns about lining the cutter height up accurately. They both thought it was AGI (A Good Idea).

I stuck down another printout on a separate piece of ply oriented so that more of the volute could be moulded. Placed the existing volute on top and lined it all up with the laser line to check accuracy of position.

Applied handles and did some practice runs without the moulder running, to check that the lead in on the template was enough.


Fixed the volute to the template and started to nibble away. Finding that the template still wasn't quite right I started swinging the template and volute round to let the cutter do the biz. And then ......

And then.....disaster struck. :( I swung it too far round, the end of the volute caught the full force of the rotating cutter and ........




"Oh, bother" said I.

So why did I lose focus ? Quite simply not concentrating on the job in hand. I was waiting for two critical telephone calls to come in and was thinking about those.
 
Bloody Hell!

I felt like that when that happened to my binding channel on the 12 string, but I managed to recover from that.

Sometimes you just have to start again.

Oh dear! You can see in the cut where it started and how as it caught the cut with each revolution got progressively deeper and deeper (which wouldn't happen with a limited block, the cuts would be getting more aggressive to a point and then they would be consistent), and we're talking about what looks to be about ten or twelve cuts from what I see in the photo which would be five revolutions or so of a two-cutter block in a machine spinning at around a hundred times a second, so that kickback happened in less than 0.05 of a second by my calculation. Scary stuff, but at least all appendages are still attached which is the main thing, new underwear is cheap enough.

It doesn't look too bad though Roger? You could salvage that possibly if you've got enough spare in the drop that goes into the volute off the straight handrail?

Yes, I don't think you'd need to extend it much to cut out the worst of the damage, it would definitely save cutting a new piece of walnut if it's possible.

Bloody hell indeed.

Things like are bad enough on the router. Damn glad I don’t have a spindle moulder.

It's a shame you didn't have some limiters in that block Roger, could have saved you a lot of trouble, surprised no one suggested it.............. ;)
 
Well...who'd a thought it? I'd cocked up the volute and made it one quadrant too big. So the bit I nadgered isn't actually needed. :eusa-dance:
