The last tomato

We had a frost this weekend, the first of the season (I should add that this is unusual, normally we have frosts in nov.). It was just cold enough to nip the tomato plants in the (unheated) polytunnel, so today I harvested the last tomatoes of the season. Not bad, almost 6 months of regular tomato supply !

There were a couple of small strawberries too !

Lucky you. Over here we have had the most rubbish season, in some 40 odd years. Mind you the damsons and apples were great.

Likewise David, hard frost here Saturday night. I picked a small tub of cherry toms, the green ones are currently in a paper bag with a banana and should ripen in a few days.

Our tomatoes didn't even ripen this year. We have a few jars of green tomato chutney in the cupboard.

I'm near Warrington and was getting strawberries up to about 6 weeks ago, and tom's up to 4 weeks ago and had a steady crop for a good 4 months, all outdoors too, naked to the elements...

I bought a Growbag and Tomato plant each for my two younger Granddaughters which did really well - we had a frost a couple of weeks ago that killed them off.
I also sowed some carrot and lettuce seeds around them which produced nothing - the frequent watering washed the seeds away!

It's G&T time though

Lemon trees don't seem to have a dormant period - new flowers produced all the time.

Yes, no dormant period at all - mine is getting quite big (about 4' wide and high) and since it cant live out in the winter here, it has moved into the dining room close to the french windows to give it some light. It takes up rather a lot of space though, not sure how we will cope with it after another year of growth, it was quite a struggle getting it in this time.

Would frost protection covers work - I bought, from our local but famous Hilliers Garden Centre, the Chelsea Flower Show "Plant of the Show" which turned out to be a very expensive twig!
It's an Hydrangea and not knowing if it will survive in its infancy have covered it with horticultural fleece.
The really annoying thing was, even though they said they were rare, a few weeks later they sold them BOGOF!!
