I've been curious about chroming to help ward off the rust monster, is it expensive. I have been wanting to try nickel plating but never got around to it yet.
Ah, so nothing fancy like wet and dry emery paper. I'll give it a go.

You might find that they will want to do their own preparation in their methods in order to be able to offer a level of quality. I'd suggest talking to them before expending too much personal elbow grease.
