• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

What a cracking product

Bit pricey for what it is. But a good solution if you’re in a jam.
I have clinch nuts should it ever happen to me.

Reminds me of those things that you used on sheet metal for using self tappers.

Agreed its pricey but relative to the time/effort it will save especially to anyone in the trade it's worth it in my book.

when in the motor trade we called em speed or spire clips.......
bet u can still buy a box of 100 assorted size for less money than that...
they are made to take threaded screws as well as self tappers.....
those were a joke....
proper speed clips are a right bxgger to get off as they have barbs.....
beside thoses shallow elec boxes on the video are carp, no electriciens I know still fits em.....

Would it not be possible to crush the lug a bit and then recut the threads? Long time ago at the elec wholesalers I bought a tap on a nice rubber T bar handle, it’s got me out of all sorts of trouble.

When it's just the thread stripped out, another option is to re-tap it to M4 - most accessories will fit an M4 screw through the mounting holes as well as the standard 3.5.

Neither approach works when the movable lug detaches from the box, though, which has been the most common failure I've seen so far.

My sparky told he just got a pliers and twisted the lug slightly sideways - yes, it would cross thread the screw, but no one was likely to want to get into it again for years if not for decades.

I’ve done this before a few times.

I must have followed this muppet when tiling kitchens, if you’re lucky when you try to remove the screw it will come out a little but then just keep turning but stop in the same place & you end up cutting the screw head off to remove the socket. If you’re unlucky the screw just turns but doesn’t come out at all.

Often it's just the poor quality of the boxes - I've taken off loads of sockets with cross threaded screws. It doesn't take much to cross thread a thread that fine.

Trouble is apart from electrical fittings, m3.5 is pretty rare to find in use.

I carefully save any that I come across, got me out of a mess several times. Ditto damaged metal boxes, I came across a load in a skip, all buckled but I took off the screws and the movable lugs from them.
Naturally these are stored in a baccy tin.

Footnote: not recently, the quality of the contents of skips has declined significantly :D

I've been looking for M3.5 spire/chimney clips without success. I wonder of there are any in the above set.

I think it's second series - you never see it in tap/die kits, although I do have 3.5mm taps, just in case.

Time was when those boxes had 4BA threads - you might... That would.seriously mess with the head of the average 20-something sparks!

I still have quite a few 4BA style boxes in my house. Even that was non standard in those days as it was traditional for electrical fittings to use odd BA threads for terminals and plug top screws.

I had to tap out the lugs in our cooker switch backbox from BA to M3.5 when the new tiles necessitated longer screws. Handy screwdriver shaped tap that I'll probably never use again..
