• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

When in hindsight one should never have really gone there

Arrived back home yesterday from the annual Xmas pilgrimage to the Mother. Switched on the iMac and as per usual, for some reason I get prompted to enter my iCloud password but although accurate and correct it gets rejected. So I cancel. And repeat the action as iCloud pops back up again. As I am definitely logged in to iCloud it is a minor annoyance but a niggle.

And so as I was in a kind of 'demob-happy' mood thought I'd get Apple support to ring me back to see what they suggested. Very helpful chaps. Getting me to do all sorts of things. Do this. Do that. Delete this. Restart. No change. Helpful chap offers to pass me over to Level 2 support. "Why not ?", thinks I.

So under his guidance reboot into Safe mode, and then we start delving into the OS...deeper and deeper we go..deleting more and more. But I drew the line when he glibly told me to delete all my cookies. Now when you empty trash in Apple, it tells you how many files are being deleted. Now I know that, being based on Unix, OS X literally has hundreds of thousands of files but even so, when that Trash window says 'Deleting 65,775 files' one does start to clench.

Especially when you next Restart and notice that all your Mail accounts are offline because the passwords have gone AWOL. OK...park that 'issue' for the moment.

We delve deeper. We clench more. At some point, I detect that my Mac is starting to perform less and less as I am used to and so I call a halt to the proceedings, thanking Helpful Chap B but telling him I'll make a full restore from my backup. You see, I rely on Keychain in Apple. It stores all the helpful things like usernames and passwords. So when it is now totally wrecked - as mine was now - after all the delving, you realise you are stuffed as nothing works. No access to bank accounts or mail. Or many other things. Time to reboot from the external backup and restore.

So's I goes to restart from my external backup which has previously worked fine. This time it does not. No way. It gets worse. I can no longer mount the backup to restore from it. It gets even worse. I cannot even get the external backup to start up. No lights. Disk spins but that's it. Boot sectors duff ? It is now 11.30pm and I have been on this for the last five hours.

I try Command-R to recover my system from Time Machine. My Mac resolutely refuses to recognise this request. I try Command-Option-R to recover via the internet so I can get my system off the Time Machine backup. The Mac is not having any of it. I am now in Full-On Stuffed mode. I have no paper copies of my passwords or usernames.

It is now 12.30 am. I switch everything off. I make another coffee. I somehow manage to find a way to re-write the boot sectors onto the external hard drive. I reboot. It works ! It is now 2am and I start the Restore. Off to bed.

I wake up (too early) to find a fully Restored iMac. Relief.

And all because of that minor niggle. Which, of course, is still there and there it will remain.

Ho hum.
:eusa-think:

Crikey a Mac behaving like a PC, that sounds like a very stressful and annoying ordeal!
Glad you got it working again.
I'm afraid I don't trust "keychain" completely and keep another record of passwords etc and my bank uses an electronic PIN number generator for online banking.

Pleased you got it sorted but that makes me glad that I have never succumbed to the temptation of iCloud.

My back ups consist of the external Lacie drive, the odd DVD, and emailing the odd document and spreadsheet to myself.
Fingers crossed, touch wood, clasp rabbit's foot and pray hard that so far so good.

If you use Keychain then you'll find that it is in the Cloud already, I believe. What happens if you go to iCloud in System Preferences ?

Think I'm giving up on using computers as all websites (apart from ours) seem to be designed by two-year olds for two-year olds with tablets. Everything is now designed to only use the middle third of the screen....lloyds Bank have just redone their website and it redefines the word 'crap'. Or 'Not Fit For Purpose' .....(unless you are using a tablet).

I get an iCloud login screen

I always decline the offer adding passwords to keychain too.

I keep getting the iCloud message - it's supposed to send a pin to my phone (to join up with) but it never does so I now ignore it.

The two-stage authentication works fine for me and I always get the 6-digit code to my phone. It also protects my AppleID.

I thought the story was going to conclude with the realization that it wasn't actually apple support and a bunch of con artists.

Sounds like you needed level 3 or engineering support.

Good effort getting it up so to speak.

And merry christmas.

Mac OSX 10.10 El Crapitan by chance?

No, Mavericks.

I tried EC but didn't take to it. There's a thread here

The main reason why I ditched EC was the very poor content to wasted white space ratio. I detest the current fashion for website design where the ratio of useful stuff (ie words etc) to wasted white space is so poor. Everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon and having swathes of pointless white space between the information.

Either that or giving two fingers to desktop users and reformatting for a mobile...so you end up with a small bit of information just down the middle of the screen...cue scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. Are you listening Lloyds?
