Concert Ukulele (The Acacia model neck is pi$$ed!)

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

I think Philly who posts here (and makes great wooden planes) made a floating router jig when he made a guitar, he might still have plans even if the jig is gone.

The progress you have made looks great, keep going.

Dave

Thanks, Gents.

Maybe I'll have ago with the bearing guided router on the Sapele model later today. I'm also having my mullet surgically removed later, so I might lose all my strength!! :D

That's better!

Use a right angle set on the router with the smaller bearing on the cutter for the instrument top.

Result.

Next for the back, measure the angle between the dished back and the tail. Check all the angles around are near enough the same and set the tilting body the same.

This one's been a bit of a blighter. The binding kept springing off, even though the channel was much neater and more uniform than the first one. I was using the Uhu glue I used before, but it took three attempts at fitting. But it's stayed stuck at last.

I learned just the other day you can use acetone for sticking binding on. Could be worth a try on the next one. You tape it on then squit it with the stuff.

Looking ace Malcolm.

Thank you for your encouraging words, Gents. Having a short break while helping family with diy issues and acquiring the constituent stuff for pore filling with epoxy.

I was aware of the acetone method, but for some reason while making the 12 string, decided not to. It might be to do with the melting of the plastic. I could end up using too much and distorting the plastic binding. I have a plan to try to make some veneer sandwiches for future models.

Anyone know where I can obtain just one litre of denatured alcohol? I've sent off for my govt permit.

I'd probably look on eBay, Malcolm.

We buy small quantities of solvents at work fairly regularly, and for the small quantities we need we have found buying single litre bottles from chemical merchants' outlets on eBay is easier and cheaper than attempting to set up an account with the merchant directly.

Edit: With your talk of permit application, I assume you're looking for I(ndustrial)DA rather than C(ompletely)DA? In which case, the eBay search might turn up a list of suppliers worth a phone call, as I doubt you'd be able to buy IDA on eBay!

Denatured alcohol is Industrial Methylated spirits. You can get it from B&Q. No need for a permit. Customs and Excise are only interested in Absolute (100%) ethanol as it’s quaffable.

Haha, I had an experience drinking punch made with absolute ethanol at a university Chemistry Society do in the 80s. Utterly and catastrophically out of my head but zero hangover the next day. Not an experience I’d like to repeat.

IMS/Denatured Alcohol is a very different beast. It contains methanol which will send you blind (and then kill you). It’s the origin of the phrase blind drunk

Can this be used for French Polishing and resin dilution?

Without wanting to argue with someone with "chemist" in their name, I'm pretty sure this isn't the case - anybody can buy Completely Denatured Alcohol (CDA) which is ethanol + 2.8% isopropyl alcohol + 2.8% methyl ethyl ketone + denatonium benzoate as a bitterant. This is what's sold as the colloquial Methylated Spirit and may or may not be purple as of 2013.
This is the only class of denatured alcohol allowed to be sold/used as a fuel.

There are then two further classes of denatured alcohol - Industrial Denatured Alcohol (IDA), which is ethanol + 5% "wood naphtha or substitute" (methanol is specifically called out as not identical to legally defined wood naphtha and not a direct subsitute in law), and Trade Specific Denatured Alcohol (TSDA) which are formulations approved for specific uses only, generally all of greater ethanol content by volume, and often including denatonium benzoate as a bitterant to prevent consumption.
Both of these second classes of denatured alcohol require a permit to buy, in any quantity - although not to receive as a free sample to judge suitabilty for a purpose...
Use of IDA as a hobbyist is also expressly permitted in law, where the technical or trade literature of the process in question calls for it.

All of those are fine to use in coatings. To be honest I’m not up to date with the ins and outs of the latest legislation from HMC&E, I’ve always used IMS because that’s what we had in the lab. We also have it at school in the Prep Room, but the difference in the last 5% won’t have a significant affect on the French Polishing process.

The purple stuff can also be used, but you should be able to find undyed meths in most hardware/diy shops nowadays.

Both instruments sanded to 240 grit and ready for pore filling.

I still haven't sourced a suitable cleaner/thinner for the resin, simply because I find the available information somewhat confusing. Probably says more about me than the information! :)

Epoxy so the thinner and cleaner is acetone.

Use disposable tools, it isn't worth cleaning, trust me.

Just to the right of the picture is a tube of paper espresso cups ready for mixing the epoxy. In my odds and sods drawer is a pack of lolly sticks to mix the resin and hardener.

I aim to use very little, so that there is little mess to clean up. But I shall be purloining one of Mission Control's silicone bowl cleaners to squeegee the mix into the pores, and I do want to clean that and reuse it. (But I won't be putting it back into the kitchen drawer! :) )
