First bandsaw box attempt

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

First bandsaw box attempt

Postby Lons » 07 Dec 2021, 16:01

I wanted to make a fun box for my granddaughter and this is the result, I haven't attempted a bandsaw box before so a bit of a learning curve and a few mistakes especially the cut lines but she's only 8 and will love it I've learned a few lessons and will definitely have a go at another box. Sanding the saw marks is a bit of a chore I found as it definitely is not my favourite job.

Stands around 250 x 125 x 150mm, I don't know what species the light wood is as it's from the scrap pile, other is mahogany and rosewood for the eye sockets, beak and handles, finished with a couple of acrylic varnish and wax. I originally made some eye but felt they were a bit dead so bought a pair of 20mm plastic ones she'll like as the appear to follow as you move.

Superb, Bob. Well done. I'd better break my duck with those things too, as I've a little ankle-biter coming to stay over christmas who might enjoy something like that.

Thanks for the kind comments guys, you clearly all need to go to specsavers if you can't see the faults that I can. It's not a Chrismas present so will be giving it this weekend and I'll get more pleasure than she will when I see her little face light up. They're brilliant at her age.

WIP! I didn't think to take photos as it's pretty simple and I doubt anyone would want to see pic after pic of me rubbing skin off my fingers sanding, sanding and more sanding, our AWL Sunny Bob is the bandsaw expert.

There are loads of example on youtube Malc including this owl which although was drawn freehand was originally inspired by a video

If you do any more of these bad boys, one on those Kirjes pneumatic, blow up rubber things (  ) and a flexible drive would be worth their weight in gold. Not cheap mind, but I use mine all the time on the lathe and recently used it to make a small Winnie the Pooh 'Hunny' spoon in Holly for my son's better half - Rob

You can see them on mine if you look on the right hand side Phil and was one of my errors as I intended to follow the grain in which case it would have been virtually invisible.

Thanks Rob, those Kirjes look very interesting but I'm too miserable a git to spend that much. :) I own an old Foredom rotary flexy kit so they certainly would be useful with that.

Yep, agreed they are a bit spendy but that's 'cos they hail from Sweden. That said, they are very, very good and there's nothing quite like that kit anywhere else. If you tried one, you'd be hooked; definitely a good stocking filler - Rob

Thanks Alan, I had seen that and I know Derek from the pen turners site but it's the whole kit he's selling and I already own a good Foredom flexi setup so really can't justify spending a couple of hundred squids, my wife would probably have something to say if I did. ;)
