A christmas gift (I hope)

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

A christmas gift (I hope)

Sorry i have not been doing much woodwork recently other than a new duck run which doesn't really count; i was going to do some joinery on that but decided it was utilitarian and didn't really warrant the effort.

However i saw a bandsaw reindeer on Epic Upcycling on youtube last year and this year i also saw a similar idea on the Workshop Companion channel. I need something to take to my mother's house this Christmas since there's not much she wants i thought i'd have a go at a bandsaw reindeer.

I made the templates from thin mdf and used and old off cut of CLS to make a small prototype:

It would be nice to get somewhere close to this, but i will have to see how i get on with my slightly cack handed skills:

I'll post the end result; hopefully still with all my fingers...

3D scroll sawing is not easy. I think you have done well so far.
My attempts at a reindeer a while back were nowhere near as good.

That laminated one looks very nice. Good luck with it.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Thanks Andy, thanks Phil,

I am using my new bandsaw and now i have worked out how to change to a narrower blade it has made a bit of a difference.

This is the video making the little one like i have tried to:

and this is the video from Epic Upcycling of the big one:

Made up a blank to bandsaw out the reindeer.

Not sure if my bandsaw capacity is going to severely limit the size; I might end up with a Christmas giraffe rather than a reindeer.

So far so good. My bandsaw blade is totally the wrong tooth count for this but I needed a narrow blade to do the fiddly bits.

So due to my bandsaw capacity I decided to further complicate things by making it in two halves and seeing if I could make them join up:

I elected to do verticals stripes rather than a cube pattern like in the photo in my earlier post because I didn’t trust my ability to get them all the same size!

Then it was a case of making an mdf template for the front aspect profile so I could put onto both blanks. I then taped them together and spent a while sketching the side aspect profile. I fear he has come out a bit dumpy but I’m quite pleased with the result so far:

(400.39 KiB)

He’s only resting together so far. I managed to ping off the tip of one of the antlers which is just drying having been glued back on and then I’ll glue the two half’s together probably with a couple of dowels to help locate and for strength. Then it’s a case of shaping the curves and removing all the bandsaw marks…

Oh and there are two blemishes I need to fill from using reclaimed wood.

Thanks Andy, just need to decide on a simple finish for him. Was thinking just boiled linseed oil or Danish oil?

So still a bit rough but I will pitch it as ‘artisan hand made’ to the recipient.

Went with Danish oil and will probably put some furniture wax on it to finish:

Don’t you start; I made him for my mum but Mrs Woodstalker wants to claim him!

I have a small blank you ca see in the bench left over. I might use that to make a small something for her.

Hindsight - a female dear is called a hind (or more usually a doe, which is why the 'pun' may not have registered for many?)

@Andyp never mind, cosine the frequency of your transmitted humour to experience and take it as a sine that the amplitude of the audience is small but that the gain is large lol

Way too many puns in this thread! I’ll try to buck the trend but my gift should go down well with the recipient.

Thats look brilliant - I'm sure the recipient will fawn all over it.
Two thirds of people don't have a clue about fractions - and the other half aren't much better.
Good decisions are based on experience. Unfortunately experience is built on bad decisions.

That's more like.
Only 2 more days to wait before I can refresh my repertoire with more jokes from the Christmas crackers.

A few years back we had Christmas at my parents house. In the middle of the night I sneaked down and swapped all the Christmas cracker jokes for some very “grown up” jokes that I had printed out at home on little bits of paper before we travelled up. I then reassembled the crackers and put them back in their box. Christmas lunch was more entertaining than usual. It was all I could do to stop mum phoning up M&S customer services to complain!
