U47 Microphone Box

Postby thetyreman » 11 May 2022, 16:22

here's a box I made for a vintage Neumann U47 microphone, sent to a studio owner in the USA, it was my second commission, it's dovetailed pine, lined with sheepskin leather and red cotton velvet on the inside, with brusso brass stop hinges, I also bent a neumann badge so it was flat to go on the top which is what the client wanted.

Very nice. I like the little badge as well.

Your client will be delighted I’m sure, a very desirable box with or without a microphone. Ian

I buy from prokraft, I was looking for that exact same catch at the start of the year and could not find it.
:eusa-doh: :eusa-doh:

Would you care to share the thickness of the leather and the adhesive used?

leather is 0.85mm thick, adhesive used was PVA white glue that I thinned out with water and applied with a roller.

Very nice. It looks very similar to what that vintge would have had originally.

Where did you get the Neumann badge? That sort of thing tends to fall into the 'hen's teeth' category.

Lovely job.

Thats really nice work.

Like others the leather covering is interesting. Any chance you could provide more detail on how you did it? I fancy having a go and if I can learn from someone else what not to do then that’s a good starter for 10!

hi Stuart, this was my reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Dts3KUgsS4 I did it in a similar way except there was one main difference, mine was wrapped from the bottom up onto the sides in one piece, same with the lid, I also made sure the wood underneath was black and with it being real leather you can stretch it a bit before the glue sets.

The difficult part is not getting any glue on the outside of the leather and making sure the cuts are just right...

You're definitely one-up on the original Neumann boxes, which would have been merely leatherette!

That is a lovely box Ben. Not what jumped into my brain when I read the title, i thought something made out of oak from the queens garden in a long cigar shape with a bull painted on it

Thanks Ben, useful and informative.

I suspect it would take me longer to cover the box than make it in the first place! I will have a go at some stage though.
