Night visitor ...any ideas what ?

Postby RogerS » 10 May 2021, 07:26

Seen these a few nights now and no idea what they are.

If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.

impossible to judge size or distance in monocular night vision. might not be a moth, but still rolling shutter. dies the camera slow it's frame rate in night mode? just wondering. :D

Interesting thought. It's a Nest Outdoor camera.

Roger, rigging up a Moth Trap is fairly easy, minimal materials. Trapping this winged wonder should solve the mystery. I warn you, if it is the size I suspect it is (50-75mm wingspan) prepare to be enthralled by the coloration. Not all moths are dun and dull!

You've not heard of Mothra? :)

Sadly it looks more like a regular moth and a camera weirdness combo to me. Kinda cool though.

What am I missing here? All I see is some kind of flying millipede stick insect combo and a tiny white speck going up the screen...
Cheers

millipedes don't fly. it's hard enough for them to organise the legs, don't give them wings as well.

I had to clean one of my cameras last week because a spider was spinning a web across it and setting the damn thing off, tiny spider looked huge on playback.

I know they don't, just saying what it looks like. Are we looking at two things or the same thing from close and further? Or is the second white speck not part of this game?

Just checking. :p its not like they are common, although ive been tild that they are often over counted by investigation looking for footprints.

Those flight paths are too smooth for bats, Roger. Because they are mammals, with backbone-based muscles, their motion is different from Insecta, who have exoskeleton-based muscles.

Bats don't fly like that, you'd barely pick them up on a night camera (and it would only be a flash) as they're moving so quickly to catch the bugs.

Looks like an insect with about 10 legs walking across the lens of the camera to me. Yes I know, it’s very doubtful.

Yep, that's definitely a moth on a rolling shutter. You can see the wings at various different points in the 'flap' cycle as the scans upwards at nearly the same speed as it flies.

At this point Roger, is it moot to mention a certain Stephen Dalton? Tacky Nollogy has moved on hugely since him, so we may look forward to Arduino or Pi driven images?
