• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

What was or is the use of this plane? Could I use it with a shooting board ? 1000001799.jpg1000001800.jpg1000001801.jpg1000001802.jpg

Precisely the opposite to something suitable for use on a shooting board, unless you needed to adjust it, that is.
Handy to have some sorta rebating or shoulder plane for that.

All the best
Tom

What you have there is a rebate plane. A plane to use on a shooting board mustn't have the iron going the full width of the body, or it will just continue to cut into the board. It needs the "safe edge" formed by the side of the casting where there isn't any cutting.

So what is your plane for? It's not a familiar, standardised English pattern. It's extra long, low and handled. The handle is tilted over, presumably to give space for your hand and protect the knuckles.

I'd guess it was for boat building, where long rebates sometimes need to be made when fitting planking. There's a little-documented world of specialist tools in boatsheds, often made by their users, as this probably was.

I was at my local flee market and couldn't resist buying it. 20 bill cdn. Start of a tool acquisition disorder, no, it will be used.
