• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hi Chaps

I bought this drawknife from Amazon

That is how it came, my first impressions where its very uncomfortable and lots of sharp edges, apart from the blade!
They did do a longer handled one, so I turned a couple of Cherry handles that are secured on like the originals with m6 bolts.
I had to run a diamond file over all the edges to remove the burrs.
It's now much better to use, it needs a higher angle of attack because of the back bevel but you can get used to it.

I removed all the bark to speed up the drying of these apple branches, because its not to long you can work on a large arc of the branch with out the handles getting in the way.

That's a bit of an understatement if the Amazon photos of the long handled version are to be believed, although I suspect that AI may have been harmed in the making of these "photos" 😆:

But in all seriousness I've been wondering about getting a small drawknife for green woodworking (specifically thinking spoon carving) so something cheap like this might be perfect, thanks.

More AI idiocy. I've got my grandfathers drawknife. It spent some time on the Somme in WW1 according to my father. My grandfather was a farmer and he used to do something with horses in WW1 and fettled cart wheels and draw handles with it allegedly. It's quite a precious tool to me, even though something I very rarely use.

My father made a couple small drawknives from a metal chop saw blade that are a bit different. If you like I’ll post some pictures after the coming weekend. Camping at the moment so the shop is 3 hours away.

That is what I intended it to be used for,

I have tried it both ways and the angle of attack seems to be about the same, I will have to do some more work with it to see what's best.

Usually
the French pattern have a long, shallow grind on one side, and a shorter steeper grind on the other. I would use it with the handles down, so long shallow bevel on the underneath. Has the edge been rounded over a bit perhaps ?

My French drawknife is an old Goldenberg from Alsace, very nice to use. For a while, NOS Peugeot Freres drawknives turned up on eBay, which were probably a good buy.

Yes please. Mind those fires! The bad ones and yours lol.
Will do. Very few wildfires here in Saskatchewan this year. We’ve been getting rain every week at least since the snow melted. 5mm last night. Green as all get out with an all you can be eaten mosquito buffet for anyone outside or slow to close the door behind themselves. 🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟
