Hello again, regarding rounding of the corners of a plane iron...
There's no mention of suggestions given, having the huge caveat for those who might not be aware!
It's fairly obvious with the videos suggested earlier on in this thread, that sure seems like either a lack of familiarisation with the use of a smoothing plane, or the assumption that everyone has a load of no.4 planes and nothing else.
Should one seeking advice, have a panel or try plane in their possesion, advice of rounding corners on a smoothing plane doesn't apply here,
as rounded corners what would be enough, to not create plane tracks, suggests the wrong tool for the job.
Such practice could very well disable the function of the cap iron, for a long time.
I don't claim to be any expert, as that would suggest extensive testing regarding cap iron steepness, and distance set from the edge.
As mentioned before, I can merely give suggestions regarding the distance away from the edge,
for panel/try and smoothing planes, when the cap iron is honed at 50 degrees, which isn't very steep, but the bare minimum.
It's the bare minimum for a smoothing plane, as honing the cap iron at anything less than this,
wouldn't allow any profiling of the cutting iron, due to the cap iron needing to be even closer to the edge.
In other words, the shallower the cap iron is honed, the closer it needs to be, to function as intended.
For a smoothing plane, a cap iron honed at 50 degees, will require the distance from the edge, to be no further away than 1/64".
Basically, my advice is to be careful with overzealous profiles on smoothing planes, and to start with a straight profiled cutting iron,
and slide the cap iron with accordance to this minimum steepness.
You might indeed find, that there actually is a profile of the cutting iron after all, and you're not able to get it close enough,
to work, i.e. to straighten out the shaving.I
Which leaves one with only one option thereafter, if adamant to retain a certain amount of camber/rounding of the corners.
That will be to home the cap iron steeper than 50 degrees.
Not much info out there regarding such, but should that be of interest, your best bet might be finding Derek's postings.
