• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Unusual scrapers, or are they?

Fascinating article, thanks for sharing Gary. It also explains why our Luddite Lurker doesn't have one if his tools are from the Western tradition rather than the Chinese one 😜

    Breast Drill Renovation

Thanks Andy I'm sure I'll find a way. After all, how do you manage to share all the planing jobs between those in your vast collection? :)

    Breast Drill Renovation

The original rear handle was a loose fit on the steel shaft (the one I had to file down to break the peened fit). The handle is drilled through and the drilled wooden surface runs on the steel shaft. I decided to do the new rear handle slightly differently by having a brass sleeve glued into...

    Workshop Uses for 3D Printing

Just for anyone else who's planning a trip to Dorset any time soon. I can confirm that there's still a reasonable selection of second-hand tools in Dolphin Antiques in Beer - these were taken last weekend: There used to be two areas in Dolphin Antiques with second-hand tools, now there's...

    Breast Drill Renovation

The first handle to deal with was the front one, which screws into one of two holes in near the chuck. This handle had a crack in it, so it seemed like the easiest way to get the threaded shaft out was to stick a screwdriver into the crack and split it in half: The screw got cleaned up with...

Nice find. That would have been very useful when I was figuring out where the springs were supposed to go

That's the only type I've tested it with so far!

    Breast Drill Renovation

With the paint dry, it was time to reassemble the body. I mentioned in the previous post that the bearings had fallen out when I tried to remove the shaft. While I think I probably found them all, the only way to be sure would be to put them in one by one and see if there were enough to go all...

    Possible New Project - Trophy

I really like the look of that scalloped bottom in your Option 3 picture.

    Unusual scrapers, or are they?

Interesting. Reminds me a bit of a planemaker's float. I wonder if it's a pig to sharpen.

    Breast Drill Renovation

I'll go with what I've used at present. I know there are lot of people who feel quite strongly about restoring stuff to its original form but it's not something that's ever been that important to me. I want it to be a well-protected (i.e. not likely to rust away) and usable tool, that's it. I...

    Breast Drill Renovation

Next up was to work on the body. It's probably fine but I'd quite like to refresh it a bit. The first thing to do was to take a cover off and have a look inside: The remaining bits of paint and as much rust as possible got removed with the wire brush as before: You may notice that I've...

That looks very similar to mine. It's interesting to see the name badge (which had long since gone on mine).

Well, that day didn't go to plan.

    Great news

    Breast Drill Renovation

Last weekend I was in Lyme Regis. No visit to that part of the world is complete without a trip to the second-hand tool store that forms part of Dolphin Antiques in Beer. I was relatively restrained (by my standards). I came away with a slightly shabby breast drill and a few countersink bits...

    2. I think I've done it straight on the ones I've done, but haven't really spent any time thinking about it. For all the others my answers are the same as Mike's.

Wood identification help needed – 1989 Japanese electric guitar body (Alder or Basswood)

As I understand it, Basswood is the American name for Lime. I've got quite a few bits of Lime and have handled quite a few more as my father is into wood carving. As Ian has said, that looks nothing like it. The only bit of alder I've ever used was for this box. That had a lot of spalting on...

Maybe it's time to go back to Tally Ho episode 1?!

So it is Spring now, for me it's still Winter

Absolutely no idea but they look more like the English ones to me. The Spanish ones I've seen are much bigger. I guess a hybrid could be anywhere in between so who knows?
