• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Shaker oval boxes

As part of my plans to do small manageable projects whilst I recover are Shaker oval boxes. So I made some patterns and then had a go:

What to do with Off Cuts?

Until last winter I had a wood burner in my workshop so I burnt all off cuts. Now I have the air source heat pump, my workshop is hot in the winter and so no need of the wood burner. The sawdust I can turn into compost with the grass clippings. It is the real off cuts that are of no use that...

    Roof Collapse

On my to do list for this year was to replace the roof on my old stable now wood store. That was before a few health issues intervened. I am back in hospital tomorrow so tidying up before I go. I went in the wood store to find water all over the floor. Looked up to see daylight. One of the...

    Lost! Now found.

Do any of you have an ideas where I might have left my 600mm steel rule. It is not in its place. I remember using it to get a line across chair rails and that I put it down somewhere stupidly I recall telling myself not to leave it there. That was January and now not a clue! I have looked most...

    Toothed Masonry hammer

What are the masonry hammers that have (had) a replaceable toothed tip used to rough up a surface or clean up mortar from reclaimed bricks called? I know they are redundant as these days it is done with an SDS drill with a toothed chisel.

    Groovin’

You know that rule that says NEVER cut a groove as deep or deeper than the diameter of your router cutter in one cut? Well it is there for a reason. This evening I was making a small box which had 6mm ply bottom and so it got a 6mm deep groove. I looked at it and decided it would be fine. It...

    Teak Table

This table is 20 years old. It lives April to November outside in Crete. It is 500m from the sea. The summer often hits 40C. It has just had its annual teak oil and clean. I think it is doing pretty good for 20 in those conditions.

    Connector Systems

I have to make some large wardrobes in the summer which need to be built in situ and possible to take apart for moving house. Has anyone got any views about whether the Festool (500) connector system is any good or whether the Lamello system is better?

    Rebate plane price

I noticed that my Stanley No 10 still has the price on it. £2.60 in 1980. And for the doubters no that is not a replacement handle.

How do you store your Rasps

I have around a dozen hand cut rasps. I use them a lot so they need to be to hand. I have tried storing them on spring clips and they currently reside in a drawer. I am not a fan of either storage solution. A drawer is not a good place to get them however the spring clips were not good either...

This is what you call a tool chest!

Behind me as I stand at my bench is a pair of double doors that only get used occasionally. So the doors became a tool wall. It has never been ideal but workable. I have considered building a tool cabinet to fill the space but as the end wall was only 400mm from the reveal of the door I have...

    Of Mice …

For a while I have thought I had mice in the workshop, but no evidence just a smell. On Monday I put together a cabinet with 8 No 3” wide 9” deep compartments at the bottom. Then placed it on the workshop floor as I needed the bench space. Today I ventured into the workshop only to find that...

    Is it just me!

So two weeks ago I started the cupboard I asked about veneering. I had to buy the veneer so needed to wait. When the veneer arrived only half of it arrived. Another wait. When it arrived my veneer glue had gone off. Still waiting for the new glue to arrive. Turns out Axminster did not have...

    Veneering Birch ply

I am thinking of making a cupboard 300mm wide from 18mm Birch faced ply as I want it light on the inside. But I want to put cherry veneer on the outside of the two outsides of the cupboard. I keep coming back to this thought that if the cupboard is made using strong joinery and has mid shelves...

    Setting a Mortice Gauge?

This does not apply to the wheel type mortice gauge. I am thinking of changing my practice for setting a mortice gauge. So when setting a traditional mortice gauge do you set the points to the size of the chisel or do you allow for the V shaped grooves and set the pins to allow for the depth of...
