• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    The Accidental Woodworking Club

I remember Barry Bucknell, I think he was on TV on Friday evenings in the 60s, his refurbishment of a house must have given a huge boost to the DIY trade. I was an apprentice joiner on day release on Mondays. He was a figure of fun to our top lecturer Frank Keeling, his cry of “ did you see...

    The Accidental Woodworking Club

Nice I idea to encourage people to take up the hobby, judging by the number of ironmongers shops that have closed in my home town , I am concerned that interest is shrinking. There appear to be no programmes on T V these days. They were very popular a couple of decades back.

    Outside door frame - finished

The tops of science benches were traditionally made of teak but reverted to iroko when the price of teak became huge.

    Outside door frame - finished

My vote goes to iroko every time, it’s not very nice to work with but its durability is better than any other material. Epoxy resin glue is a must for jointing but well worth any extra cost. Mike.

    Scam alert

I advertised for a Dewalt 2000watt router I was contacted in this way and was told about a machine, reputed to be used, when enquiring about price the figure given was only just under the retail price and that carriage would be extra. I think this may be just a method of retailing! Mike

    Spindle Moulder Fence material

My sedgewick has steel fence place fitted with hardwood faces. If a sacrificial fence is needed a length of softwood is screwed to the front.

    Distressing oak furniture

I have seen it being done by simply striking the piece with chain and pieces of wood to spoil the crisp edges and mar the surfaces. I’ve never tried it and find the whole idea repulsive.

    Router jigs & accessories

Your local saw sharpening service are normally able to sharpen TCT cutters. Large diameter cutters can be sharpened by hand on a diamond plate providing you buy the ones with a flat front face to the TCT

    Router jigs & accessories

There appears to be some strange effects with that cut. One side has the whispy edge and yet the other end grain cut looks spot on. The ere is also some evidence of scorching which is usually a sign of blunt cutters. I have little confidence in trend as a supplier since a very poor performance...

    Router jigs & accessories

In the case of the jig shown in my photo the edge of the cut is touching the template so I wouldn’t expect any fuzzy edges. Does this occur with cross grain cuts or all directions of grain. If you have any high speed steel cutters why not try one and see if they produce the furry edges.

    Router jigs & accessories

Having looked at some of these adds for ready made templates, they all seem to be a way of spending on something which any of us could knock out in minutes. As to furry edges, that’s not some thing I’ve experienced. Is the cutter sharp?

    Router jigs & accessories

Like most contributors I have to many jigs and need to do an occasional cull. The photos show an adjustable jig for cutting housings (dado to Americans) and one of my staircase trenching jigs. Both are easy to make and vital for swift accurate work. The stair trenching jigs can be purchased...

    Parking Control

The more I look at this the more convinced I am that parking control reduces the number of customers on licensed premises.

I think they may be oak galls. Try googling it!

    Grandad's Garden seat

I have a number of items of garden furniture made in iroko. It’s a wonderful material for its long lasting qualities.

    Parking Control

Anyone been caught? A number of local hostelries have had this system installed in my locality. I am convinced that it’s a stupid idea since it’s already reducing the numbers of customers to a great extent. The idea is that customers are required to enter their vehicle reg number in a terminal...
