• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Spindle cutters query

As you say they look like an item made for a specific use and they obviously produce an ovolo Perhaps they are intended to run in a stack with a rebate block?

    Drawer retention device

I can recommend this system that has retained the wide drawers in the top of my toolbox for years now. The turn buttons are rotated through 90 degrees to remove the drawer. They project only a small distance into the height of the drawer.

    Circular table apron

If you fancy a round top table these are very useful. It’s 640 mm diameter and the cylindrical part rotates on a lazy Susan bearing.

    Circular table apron

My suggested method would be to cut a full size template in 12 mm plywood and use that as a base for three layers of solid blocks with staggered joints to make the 70 mm height before bending a single 2mm thick laminate round the outer face after cleaning up the outer face with band saw and...

    Lockdown furniture.

Having owned the chair for four years I’m considering selling it on as a conversation piece.

    Axminster Warrington store closing

I remember frequent use of the words Design, and Textiles as practical subjects. I’ve also noted that most of the stock in M & S is made in India

    Axminster Warrington store closing

My concern is that this just another symptom of the decline in interest in woodworking as a hobby or occupation. My own interest was based on the woodwork and metalwork classes at secondary school, these were part of the curriculum in both grammar and secondary modern schools in my time .My...

Does anyone know anything about "security" cameras?

Mike I thought that you had purchased a trail camera some time back, if you still have it then it should serve your purpose.

    Knives & rubbish?

I still have a collection of hand made cutters to fit a whitehill block, but the block went in the bin long ago! That is where they should all be in my opinion. The modern safety blocks with locating pins have been a requirement for years now. I did once see a cutter come out of a whitehill...

Books on chair design and construction

I’m convinced it’s the best way to get what you really want! I failed to mention that all joints are mortise and tenon, not a dowel anywhere! I made a couple of uncomfortable garden seats to published designs in pine, when my wife sat on a friends bench seat and commented on the comfort, my...

Books on chair design and construction

I can recommend the method I used many years back. While looking at what was available in the shops and trying out belonging to others, a work colleague asked me to repair an oak dining chair reputed to have been made in the 1930s. When the chair was repaired I asked the owner if I could make...

    Pay to read?

Anyone else tired of clicking on what looks like an interesting story, only to find that it’s yet another item that you must pay to read? I don’t think this will really bring in new subscribers and may damage the platform it’s on. It’s just driving me away,

    Light Oak?

I don’t agree, in my opinion all oak can be described as light oak until its colour is darkened using stain of some kind. The only exception being that sold as “ brown oak”which I understand to be affected by some kind of fungus or disease which affects the colour during growth.

    Light Oak?

Ray. It doesn't appear to be one of the usual suppliers who do “ Oak Furniture “ for the local council estate but the quality seems to match.

    Sliding Dovetail proportions

I would agree with Ian, an eight foot span is too wide even for a very lightly loaded shelf. I think a small return on the vertical edges looks better than having the 22mm front edge showing, sliding dovetails seem to be a lot of work for little reward. Have you considered the advantages of...

    Light Oak?

These people are selling to the general public rather than woodworkers like you and I, the description should avoid missleading people as this seems to be doing. Regretably just the word Oak seems to imply solid quality, it must be time to grip the importers of this poor quality junk.

    Light Oak?

I’ve just seen yet another add for what I think must be imported rubbish furniture. This one describes the junk as light oak and then goes on to state that it’s made of cedar! How the hell does that work as an accurate description ?

    Jay Blades Home Fix

He may have but I had largely switched off by then. The reupholstery of the stool was my limit. It does seem a shame that there are no worthwhile instructional shows on tv.

    Jay Blades Home Fix

Just viewed the first one I recorded earlier this week. Anybody seen one? He did show how to change a tap washer but the rest was rubbish with a hint of danger., Barry Bucknell was ten times better in the 60 s, and we laughed at him!. I think there is a need for a programme on home repairs/...

    Garden Table

I don’t rate the use of buttons on the long sides of the apron in that illustration. When the top expands the leg joints may be damaged.
