• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    St Dubricius church, Porlock

Wonderful that they've secured funding. Apparently quite unusual oak shingled spire but couldn't find it in Cecil Hewett's English historic carpentry. I wonder is the unusual status beyond the truncated appearance which might have been old damage not previously fixed...

    New shed build

There are a few details I've posted already including how I dealt with insect mesh. Might vary a bit depending on what cladding you're using. https://www.thewoodhaven2.co.uk/threads/oak-timber-frame-and-formally-a-diminished-stile-door-markup-and-cutting-the-diminished-part.11313/page-2

    New shed build

Your brickwork looks spot on, nice and neat and well pointed. I've made a couple of timber frames, one on a continuous dwarf wall and one on a pier and curtain setup. I'll try and hunt out some photo details.

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Thanks. Saw fallings are literally what falls off the bandsaw when rough dimensioning timber in the sawmill. At least that's the term my local sawyer uses. So it might be odd widths and depths.

Oak Timber frame (and formally a Diminished stile door (markup and cutting the diminished part?))

Some work outside today. Though not wood work, related to the timber frame. I've had the drain pipes propped up at an angle while working on other things. Had intended running setts around the perimeter to form a border, probably for bulbs or something easy. Part of these will be set in more...

Totally agree and my approach as well but the thread just made me wonder.

    Lost! Now found.

Just on the subject of rulers, I've a 300mm, 600mm and 1000mm ruler. They don't quite read the same so placing alongside each other the 300 at the top reads 300mm slightly shorter than the same mark on the 600mm But slightly more than the 300 mark on the 1000mm rule I think these are all...

    Lost! Now found.

Thanks for these links. I've just ended up using rulers and tapes with metric and imperial on the same side and I'm sure it's contributed to errors in the past though its probably also made me very familiar with both systems. However, I'm going to invest in some new rulers now

    What I have fixed today

Fantastic when things are rescued from the dump and given a new lease of life. It is bonkers what people just discard. Feels like it's getting to the stage where some people mightn't be able to change a fuse! Non-electrical but I went through a period of rescuing old garden bench ends that just...

    It's pretty serious stuff

    Seals for sliding sashes

Oh, that's great, thanks. The videos show the installation of the brushes and strips. Might not bother with a WIP. That's the fella from Bradshaw joinery if I'm not mistaken.

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

The door is now glued and drawbored pinned. Everything cramped up and then the pins hammered home. Most went in easy except that bashed lower one. Drawbore was a little entusiastic on that one but it went through. This little scrap wood wedged stand was great for tidying up the stiles...

    Seals for sliding sashes

Is there a decent guide anywhere for what sort of seals to use in the various different parts of a sliding sash. I'll be making at least 3 of these hopefully soon and might do a WIP. Nearing the end of a door build but having to wait for a few things before I can completely finish it and in the...

    What I have fixed today

It's a French make. I just make up some from the powder and water and it usually gives a nice result.

    What I have fixed today

This one is related to the manhole that I uncovered and installed access for. It seems the previous owners did like to cover up waste pipes. After odd smells and signs of a leak I cut 3 holes (only 2 shown) in this wall for access and to cap off a waste pipe going into the soil pipe that was...

Hanging a door. Some finer points

Hmmm, in 2 minds now about what to do. I've cut in a couple of these already but take the point about size of the knuckle and grease leaking with potential staining in the future. Originally picked these due to weight of the door. Its heavy now and not even glazed yet. Checked on...

Hanging a door. Some finer points

Thanks for all the replies. It would seem I've picked a poor quality hinge perhaps. Admittedly I was disappointed about the makers stamp. Looks certainly unnecessarily prominent but I suppose would be not in view for the most part. Can't remember what I paid for them but perhaps I'll have a look...

Hanging a door. Some finer points

Thanks for the confirmation: I wonder is it an appearance issue or if there's a strength reason behind it

Hanging a door. Some finer points

I have hung doors with the hinge side with the most knuckles on the frame, the fewer on the door. So hinge in the picture would be frame side left, door side right. I think this is correct but not sure what the usual is.

    Possible New Project - Trophy

I think it looks very smart. With reference to the mitres, I've noticed the unnoticeable or frank illusions in photographs I've posted but from what I can see those corners are crisp and beautifully formed
