• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Post the predictable eclipse photos here

Probably not worth waiting for the next one; according to Matt Frei on the CH4 news last night, the next event will be in 2081 - Rob

    Home made try square

The trouble with aluminium or a square with a nice wooden blade (Swiss pear or Boxwood) is using said square with a über sharp Japanese marking knife. I know I could quite easily slice a bit off an edge whereas it don't happen with one made from steel - Rob

The only time I've ever got caught was on the A303 heading towards the M3. A patrol car with clearly nothing better to do was pulling motorists over with dirty number plates, where the lettering/numbers are all but legible. If the boys in blue can't read your number plate, you'll get a ticket...

    Home made try square

For the same reason that some handsaws have a little 'nib' at the front and some don't, although I can see the reasoning for having a peg on a wooden try square - Rob

I don't know what the traffic is like round your way Chas, but hereabouts there's no 'increased pleasure' in any driving by car as a) there's a lot more of the bloody things on the road and b) those that are have got a hell of a lot 'fatter' (carspreading) than they were even a few years ago...

Never owned an automatic and have no intention of ever doing so, but driving one on a 'fly drive' tour of the Canadian Rockies a couple of years ago isn't an experience I'd care to repeat, fabulous as the scenery was - Rob

Good to hear they're both OK, albeit a bit shocked. At the end of the jour, it's only 'stuff' that got damaged and that's all replaceable; a 10% margin on yer speed is all it takes to get a ticket and if I'm out with SWIMBO and I remotely stray over or anywhere near the limit I get the...

Wow, that's awful. Good luck with 'negotiations' and the missus. Glad nobody was hurt - Rob

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; glazing, waxing and finally DUN n'DUSTED!

All the little odds n'sods have now been finished to 320g and detail sanded to the same. The glazing bars and door frame have had their first coat of Odie's Oil and are hanging up to harden off before buffing with a clean towel: The six shelves have also been sanded to 320g in the jig shown...

    More of those lab benches.

Years ago I did a very 'Heath Robinson' test sort of thingie by comparing standard O1 steel against the newfangled PMV-11 stuff, newly invented by LV. Derek Jones was the current editor of F&C mag and had got hold of the first PMV-11 blade in the UK, which he posted to me (I still have it in...

    Field fire....

She appeared to be stoned out of her head as well Sam; there was deafening drum n'base 'muzak' coming form the field's location so I have absolutely no idea what she was doing there...maybe a bar-b-q that went awol? Dunno. The field belongs to the Earl of Pembroke (owner of Wilton House) so no...

    Field fire....

Just over a week ago the eejit woman in a council house just down the road from us started a fire in the stubble field behind her house. I was out watering a hanging basket and saw the smoke accompanied very shortly after by 9' high flames, so I legged it over to her place and 'politely...

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; glazing, waxing and finally DUN n'DUSTED!

Approaching the last bit now, apart from the glazing. I use a combination of hand and powered sanding (Festool) to work down through the grits with my preferred final paper being the 3M Tri-M-ite Freecut stuff which is by far the best sandpaper I've every come across. This was used exclusively...

American here in Oundle (Peterborough) - Brand new to woodworking

On better quality pieces you'll probably find a machine dovetail construction on the drawers. You can usually tell when they're made by a commercial machine as the tails and pins are identical sizes - Rob

American here in Oundle (Peterborough) - Brand new to woodworking

You may find that the construction of the pine drawers isn't very robust; the fronts could be held on with nothing more than two or three dowels and if you'r lucky, there might be a dab of glue included. Under workshop conditions they're liable to fall apart quite rapidly so not recommended...
