• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    A double stopped dovetail housing!

I remembered something last night and so think I understand the bloke's starting point. There's a tradition in German joinery of taking a table top and preparing it to take the legs by putting a piece of wood in a sliding dovetail housing, usually with the conventional taper, which runs across...

    A double stopped dovetail housing!

He did say at one point that it would be normal to taper the joint a bit but he was referring to the side walls. You're right of course: a very light taper from top to bottom and it would be bomb proof. Apparently, he's only just come up with the idea and repeatedly invited comments/suggestions...

    A double stopped dovetail housing!

Here's a link to a German bloke doing a through dovetail housing and a double stopped(!) housing using a router and a bandsaw: It's obviously completely visual and so I will not describe it further. I do wonder about an application for the double stopped thing but maybe somebody might think...

Spare I/2" Blades for Veritas Router Plane

Thanks for the tip, Eric. I'll give it a go.

Spare I/2" Blades for Veritas Router Plane

Does anyone know if you can get just the blade piece (1/2") for the Veritas router plane as opposed to getting it with the post as well? So far that's the only way I've found it being offered.

Incidence of mosquito bites this year.

This is little more than idle chitchat but it might generate an echo. I live in the southern half of Germany and the last 3 or 4 summers have been IMHO barbarically hot with grassed areas just turning into big rich tea biscuits every year and staying in that state for months. The water table in...

    Interesting Looking Leg Vice

Have a look at this: https://hovartercustomvise.com/product/the-cheetah-leg-vise The video clip about 1/3 of the way down is interesting. I've got to admit that I do like the look of this. Then again there will be people on here who will be capable of seeing disadvantages which I can't.

Parcel Forwarding Services - Europe to UK

Mike, thanks for the tip ref MBE. I had never heard of them and will look into it. That sounds ideal.

    Bad Axe Saw Set

The reactions are more or less what I accepted. I think that when people have a think and come up with new ideas to be applauded but I suspect that this bit of kit would only be needed by a specialist.

Parcel Forwarding Services - Europe to UK

At the risk of hijacking Dr Al's thread (apologies!), I have a very similar but reverse problem. I'm a member of The Wine Society and have some wines in storage with them. After Brexit happened they threw their hands in the air and decided that sending things to the continent was all too...

    Bad Axe Saw Set

I just stumbled on this video on YouTube: It would appear that Bad Axe has developed a completely new type of saw set. As someone who has never gone near to sharpening and setting a saw, it looks to me like a bit of kit that might take a bit of mastering. What do those of you who do sharpen...

Can you mix wood stain with Danish Oil?

Thank you all very much for the replies. The stain is spirit based, so I will definitely have to do a test piece to see if it works. Phil's got me a bit worried with his points about blotchiness, which is yet another reason for testing. If it turns out blotchy then I shall try to find some...

Light restoration of an Ulmia Reform Hobel

He refers to the grooves for mounting the soles being the result of a "Spezialfräsung". In this context this simply means a specialised routing procedure. As background info: fräsen is the verb "to rout". An Oberfräser is a classic hand router in the manner of e.g. Festool.

Can you mix wood stain with Danish Oil?

I thought I'd ask this to see if somebody has already done it and thus save myself a lot of experimenting. I'm making a simple stand out of pine for a friend. She wants it staining a bit darker (an aesthetic crime IMHO), so I bought some stain. The idea is to stain and then apply Danish Oil. It...

Light restoration of an Ulmia Reform Hobel

The older Ulmia planes (before the firm was sold or taken over or something) are spoken fondly of by many German woodworkers. I picked up a dovetailing plane for €10 at a flea market. It's essentially in perfect condition although I dislike the thinnish metal fence. One day I'll try to knock out...

A plane you might not have come across before - the holzdraht hobel

Andy, if there are any specific bits you want translating, I'd be happy to help out. Obvs the offer stands for everybody else too, provided you don't want a whole book translated.

    Planing without winding sticks

I've recently got a few boards of knot-free, relatively even-grained pine and I've been preparing a few 2' lengths from them before going on to the 6' for my soon(-ish) to be made bookcase. Normally I start in the conventional way by seeing what the winding sticks say. However, I forgot that...

    Modifications to sports

Mike G's comments on the civil service thread got me thinking about spots that would benefit from modifications. Formula 1. Drivers allowed paint ball pistols to be available for use against opponents as deemed necessary. (Five rounds per player per race.) Golf. Restrict them to three bats...

    Getting an edge horizontal

Most experts start flattening a board by doing one of the faces. There is of course no reason why you can't start with an edge. That said, the disadvantage is that it offers much less of a reference surface than a face i.e. better to correct an edge from a face than the other way around. This...
