• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    A Japanese style garden shed

Maybe a bit close, yes. Thanks for noticing that. In fact two of the trees that aren't quite overhanging the site are young walnuts. They aren't fruiting yet but when they get older I'm sure they will drop some heavy nuts onto the metal roof. Don't want that. I can't move the shed too far from...

    A Japanese style garden shed

The second coming of the shed begins. After a miserable summer of heat, humidity, and setting up my new shop, I can now think about re-raising the shed. I have a spot picked out: And I held a modest jinchinsai ceremony to pacify the local spirits and thank them for allowing my build...

    Yet another box WIP

That is lovely. It so happens I've been reading about how to calculate all the angles angles for a box like that, which I've known as a "hopper".

    Sawhorses

The story of the sawhorses is fascinating. The were used in building a timber framed pavilion in a nature reserve in Suriname, to be used as part of an eco-tourism development. Here is a bit of the challenge they faced getting materials to the site: THE building site is only accessible during...

    Metal roofing being installed.

    New garage shop

Interior got one coat of white. Exterior got a coat of sealer plus masonry sand to give the surface some tooth for the plaster to come. After all this work I sure hope the dust collector fits.

    Bundwerk barn

Yes, it is supported over a slope. I'll look for the pictures. Be right back... OK, here is what that looks like: 10" x 18" creosoted Douglas fir beams sitting on Oregon white oak posts. All that extends the floor beyond the concrete pad.

    Bundwerk barn

There will be plenty of natural light. I think Reuben said something like 20+ windows. Metal roofing starts going up today. You can see some of the panels in the foreground. There was some discussion about whether the roof framing to accommodate those dormers was sufficiently supported. That...

    New garage shop

More incremental progress. I've decided go ahead and paint the inside. And I'm going to use a Japanese lime plaster for the outside, for practice.

    New garage shop

Yes, the closet sits on 2x6 pressure treated cill plates anchored to the concrete floor. That gap and all others will be sealed with "green glue sealant."

    New garage shop

A little prettier. I used up some scraps for the second layer, which explains the extra joints. All taped up and one more pass with joint compound to go. I'm going to leave the inside unpainted. I have something different in mind for the outside.

    New garage shop

That corner is going to take a lot of hits, I expect. I'm planning a metal corner bead and/or covered with a wood corner trim. And I'll just replace that panel with the broken corner. I have plenty of scraps that will fit. To be honest, I really don't want to get better at this. I just want to...

    New garage shop

The closet is nearly done. I need to add the second layer of drywall to the front face, cut a hole for the intake duct, and make a sand filled door. The door will be quite heavy so I've planned for four, ball bearing hinges. I will be very glad when this is finished. I'm not very good at...

    Bundwerk barn

The latest. It has been raining so he has been working on sculpting the ends of the purlins. All chisel and hammer work. He hopes to get the roof up this week after it stops raining.

    The luxury of sufficient funds

I used to live in the same small town as this guy. I never met him but folks in my woodworking circle of friends have. His story is that he was a decent enough professional woodworker and carpenter, if a bit quirky. He found he could make more money being quirky on Youtube than he could doing...

    Bundwerk barn

My friend is having a wonderful time. He has been dreaming of this building for many years and it is great to see him finally get a chance to do it.

    Bundwerk barn

Center beam, second floor joists, and plywood for second floor. Still awaiting a roof. Tarp over the roofless barn to mitigate a few days of rain. And a nice pic of the "gitterbund."
