• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Recovering from an op- ideas of what to do?

I once had an op after which the nurses were worried that I wasn’t waking up properly. They called the doctor to take a look. “How many times have you pressed this button?” he asked me pointing at the PCA machine. I told him. “You must be in quite a lot of pain”, he said. “Oh no”, said I, “they...

    Secondary glazing

This is the M&T layout that I decided on (numbers are mm). It’s not centred, but that allows the edges of the M and the T to align with the edges of the rebate. When the rebates are already cut, this gives extra guides for keeping things aligned. It also manages to keep two of the tenon...

    Secondary glazing

I’m sure you’re right. I was planning to do more machines & jigs/templates, but I’ve ended up doing a weird hybrid. When I cut the rebates, I thought I maybe wouldn’t even mark anything on the pieces (ha!), but I drew a lot of lines today. For the one mortice, I just chiseled it out. For the...

    Secondary glazing

Started cutting M&Ts with a combo of hand saw & router. Did one M&T, changed the layout halfway through to better align with the rebates, decided to cut a bunch of tenons. Made a lot of dust. It’s going OK. Might have been easier to do the M&Ts before rebating 🤷‍♂️

    Tiny fanlight-style catches

Absolutely. Do you know a source of smaller ones?

Hanging a door. Some finer points

I think it’s because the size of the leaves and placement of the screw holes may be subtly different so if you ever have to completely remove and put back a hinge, it helps to know which way round it goes when you put it back.

    Bedside Table

I like the 2-drawer design Al, but I’d be inclined to experiment with hiding the top rail behind the drawer front of the top drawer so that only middle and bottom rails are visible.

    Tiny fanlight-style catches

Thanks Andy. Screens get opened multiple times a day much of the year so that the windows can be opened & closed (screens are interior to outward opening windows) and then taken off for several months. For the current screens I made, I started off with magnets but decided really needed to be...

    Tiny fanlight-style catches

Does anyone know where I could find tiny fanlight-style catches (that is, small surface-mount spring latches)? I’m looking for something low profile, projecting no more than 10 mm from the surface, and no more than 20 x 20 mm I’m actually interested in hearing about any kind of low profile...

    Bird Dawn 03:50

It’s lovely noise actually and I like getting up early and it being light. We’ve also got a range of owls providing the music at dusk & night. I love the sound of the tawnies.

Someone should tell the birds that sunrise is not until 04:46 today. Think it’s mainly wrens singing.

    Coronated

I think Dr Geoff Lindsey has some interesting things to say on these subjects. Here’s a bit discussing historical use of “gotten” in UK and US: Suggests “gotten” fell out of favour on both sides of Atlantic until a late 19th C resurgence in the States and an internet age revival in the UK...
