• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Secondary glazing

Showing how inaccurate my track and tracksaw currently are, I have to add 1 mm to a combo square butted against the track’s strip to get the right rebate and add 2 mm to the desired depth to set the depth setting on the saw. Now finished rebating for all 7 windows plus 3 extra stiles for luck.

    Secondary glazing

Decided to continue rebating. Halfway through, but will now cut a couple more long lengths as backup. A couple of the ones I’d already cut are a bit bendier than I feel comfortable with. Probably could be ignored or adjusted at this point if they stay still, but if they’re actually moving, it’ll...

    Secondary glazing

I cut the rebates for 3 of the windows using the track saw. I did test cuts which was useful because my Makita track saw isn’t very accurate compared to the measurements on the saw - cuts too deep - and the height is kind of hard to adjust to mm precision anyway. Now I have a bunch of 7 mm x 23...

    Extra length on window components

Horns on sliding sash windows aren’t cut off. I believe one of the reasons for that is because of how people grab the rail to move the window up and down so need the strength to resist that. I’m talking about swinging casement windows though which have different stresses and no horns once finished.

    Extra length on window components

This is interesting. If the tenon & wedges were oversized enough to split the mortice if the horn were not there, wouldn’t they still be oversized enough to split the mortice when the horn is removed? 🤔 Is the idea that the time between inserting the wedges and removing the horn allows the...

    Extra length on window components

The calculation of the number of pieces from a length of timber and where to make the cuts to share the extra length across all the pieces was something I created a little web calculator for just today: https://woodwindows.github.io/secondary-glazing/length.htm?piece=476 The piece size and...

    Extra length on window components

In my own peculiar way I’m referring to extra length on either or both stiles and rails and I’m interested in all the possible reasons for it. You’ve both provided useful info. I knew that part of the reason was protection against damage, but it was vague in my mind and I hadn’t absorbed the...

    Secondary glazing

Cutting 2x2s to 1040 mm (for 1013 mm final) and 480 mm (for 468 mm final). I probably should have left the short lengths as doubles at 960 mm for the rebating stage. Oh well. Next time. Managed to select and rough cut the lengths for 7 of the ten casements before the weather turned. Used the...

    Extra length on window components

If you’re making a casement window, it seems common to allow some extra length on the pieces so that you can trim them flush with the other sides after assembly. If you don’t do this and instead cut directly to final length, there’s a risk that minor inaccuracies will make the pieces too small...

    Secondary glazing

I gave the parts list a bit of a glow up. Now I can link to it directly. It’s earlier on the page. It’s more readable. And it includes rough sizing for the sash components. https://woodwindows.github.io/secondary-glazing#parts Think I’m ready to start cutting. Since the weather isn’t great, I...

    Secondary glazing

I’ll be going back to non-mitred bridle joints for this set of windows. I didn’t really describe the joint when I did the first window and it’s a little different than a standard bridle because of the rebates so here goes: A standard bridle joint has the tenon in the middle - often it’s a third...

    Secondary glazing

The relevant measurements show that the dimensions are the same for all the upstairs window (within a mm or two), so with secondary glazing sash size of 468 mm x 1013 mm and glass of 392 mm x 937 mm, I should be able to cover them all. These widths are the same as the window I just did in the...

    Secondary glazing

The first window was a one-off. For the second double window, I made things a little more rigorous by having a plan and writing the sizing & parts list calculator to keep me on the straight and narrow. Because I used that calculator, I could have ordered the glass before I even started the...

    What I have fixed today

Didn’t have enough light at the sink in the kitchen. Have under-cabinet lights that we never use. Unplugged the under-cabinet lights, plugged a flexible desktop lamp in to that socket on top of the wall-mounted cabinet and pointed it down at the sink. Added a Hue bulb for control. Is fixing a...

    Tack Hammers

I’ve done my share of holding pins with needle nose pliers, but I switched to piloting with a headless pin and shoving the pin in the hole (sometimes with the aid of a nail punch) partly cause I was piloting anyway and partly just to avoid the pliers.

    Tack Hammers

Glad you mentioned this. I think I have a rampin somewhere that I’ve never used that came with a plane or a gauge or something from eBay. I should dig it out. I’ve recently been using the low tech equivalent: shoving really hard with the end of a nail punch.

    Tack Hammers

    That is a light hammer! Only 30 g. I don’t think I’ve got a hammer less than 100 g. I tend to use a 200+ g hammer for ‘delicate’ work. The Draper tack hammer is 190 g.

A quick cost update from the earlier prices to ones I paid now (actually ‘now’ was in Oct 2025): 20.5 x 119 was £47; now £37 44 x 44 was £26; now £20 Moulding bead was £22; now £17 Door stop was £27; now £35.75 The overall effect on the original secondary glazing would have been £8.75 cheaper...
